My problem is that starting yesterday, my computer has been shutting off randomly. It happened when i opened any folders on my desktop and sometimes for no apparent reason at all. Im clueless on what to do. Ive tried using system restore but thats about all ive done.

Is there anyone who has any suggestions on what i should do to fix this?

Btw, heres the error report. Not really sure if it helps.

I would put in my OS disc, and boot-up, select "repair Windows". That might help.

You do have problems. 1. The driver upgrade, could be your chip-set drivers or your video card. You should update both, for your chip set go to your MB web-site and fine your drivers in the support section. Video card same deal, who ever makes your video card, go to the web-site and download the latest drivers for your card. Note: Before you install the new video drivers, be sure to uninstall your current drivers, then boot-up and install new drivers. 2. Disable BIOS caching/shadowing, well you got to go into your BIOS, look in your manual or the online manual, there's normally one button you push repeatedly, when you first boot up your computer. Once in, do the obvious, find caching/shadowing, and selected disable. Save and exit BIOS.

From your first post, I suspect that you have some corrupt systems files, that need to be repaired. Or re-install windows.

Could try breaking open the case and manually reset bios??? Try then ask why.

Please define "shutting off randomly". Do you mean, you're doing something and then, the screen becomes blank and the fans spin down, it "shuts down". Or, you get a blue screen and must reboot. First case can be that your computer is turning off as a safety mesure. That can happen with overheating, or a bad power supply. Second case is either bad memory or software error (that means, driver bug or windows bug). There are diagnostics you can make to find if you have any of theses problems. To check the temperatures of your CPU, you can use Speedfan (for windows), or sensord (linux). If you see your CPU gets hotter than 70C when under full load, it's the problem. You can check if you have any memory defects with memtest86+, which you can get by downloading and booting the "ultimate boot cd". (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/). Also if you have a driver problem, try to upgrade your drivers to the newest version.

Oh sry, i should have been more specific. It switches to a blue screen and tells me to reboot.

I just finished downloading the drivers for my nvidia card but the latest drivers for my intel chipset were 2 years old. Something tells me that didnt help.

On a side note, i disabled BIOS caching but i wasnt able to locate anything that said shadowing.

But i'll try checking for memory defects and any overheating issues. ill check back in a little while.

i used speedfan and the only thing that stands out is one reading under "Temp1" (Theres two with the same name, its the 2nd one) that is staying steady at 70C. is that a problem?

Oh, and "Temp2" does go over 70C periodically. keep in mind i have multiple browsers/programs up to test it and when it switched to the blue screens, i was never running multiple programs, just opening a folder or something menial like that.

Ok. With Speedfan, to know which one is your CPU temp, it's the one that rises when you use a lot your CPU. You can know about CPU usage using Window's task manager. To generate an artificial CPU load for testing, you use programs like "OCCT". For the UBCD, you download this one: http://www.mordum.org/ubcd411.iso That's a .iso file. That means it's a cd image, you can burn it to a CD-R using any burning software. Then you boot that cd, it includes many small utilities. You just navigate the menus until you find memtest86+.

alright ill try the aritificial CD load out. but itll take me a while to try out the UBCD because im all out of CD-R's, cept for the blank ones for music.

but generally, do you think the main problem is between overheating or a power supply problem?

and i dont think its an overheating issue, sometimes itll run perfectly when i have multiple programs up and shut down when im idling.

If you still mean "blue screen" by "shuts down" then I guess it is a memory or power problem. But it could also be something else, it's impossible to tell without diagnostics... You can't magically know what's wrong with it, computer troubleshooting takes time.
