My receiver is a Onkyo HT-R518. I connected my PS3 to it via an optical cable from the digital output to the digital input(Optical 1) in my receiver. I then selected the Optical 1 option on my receiver and switched the sound settings in the PS3 to Optical as well but I dont get any sound. What could be the problem?

Turn both off, and restart it after 5 mins, should fix the problem.

Can you upgrade your firmware at all on the receiver?

I dont think so. I guess the problem lies in the cable. I will try a new one later in the day and let you know about the result.

make sure that your reciever is compatible with whatever output you have your ps3 set for. Also, you can look at the end of the cable and see if it has red light comming through.

I have tried all possible settings. Can you elaborate about the red light?

Its an optical cable, plug one end in, and look at the other, you should see a red light.

I plugged in the cable in the digital out from the PS3 and the other end gives the red light. The cable is working then...

heres my setup maybe try this if you have enough cables. run an hdmi cable and a optical cable from the ps3 to the receiver then run another hdmi from the receivers output to the tvs input. i have dolby digital 5.1 and DTS selected on my PS3. on my receiver the optical plug actually doesnt correspond with the hdmi port im using so i have to first go to the video input then when that shows up on the tv screen i have to change over to the audio.

I kinda got the same setup, but my reciver has tons of HDMI ports, so everything I have is connected to that, and one going out to the TV, and if I don't want surround sound, then I just press pass-through, works like a charm.

I have no idea why this is not working. I will try what you have suggested after I buy a new HDMI cable.

You know that if you have HDMI running from PS3 to receiver that you don't need the optical for sound, right? HDMI carries video and audio signals, and the sound is better.

Only if the receiver accepts audio over HDMI, cheaper ones tend to be pass-through

Just take the PS3's HDMI send it into the reciever (HDMI>Optical) and then have the reciever out to the TV.
