Help: diablo II Horadric staff used correctly in tomb--game exited--now stuck

Help,

I got the staff, took it to the correct tomb, stuck it in the receiver, got all the lights and whistles, but I had to exit after that.

If I return to the tomb there is no exit where the staff was inserted.

I tried to get another staff in the Maggot Lair, but there is not one in the chest.

I have completed all the quests but this one, but now I'm stuck in Luy Gholein with no where to go.

Any Help?

Believe you have to get the pieces again.

Or the tunnel may be open still.

I went (fought) back to the tomb, and looked for the tunnel. There is a beam of light coming up

from the alter which I think is how it was after I put the staff in, but I can't find the tunnel anywhere.

(Do you recall where the tunnel is with regard to the alter?)

So I thought like you that I would have to get the pieces again so I went back to the Maggot's Lair,

knocked him off again, opened the chest which had lots of goodies but no Horadic Staff so aparently

there are no pieces to get.
