Okay, everytime I start playing a game on my computer, I get a bunch of artifacts about 10-20 seconds into the game. If I don't quit the game quickly, my computer will freeze and I have to reboot.

I have an 2.4ghz P4 processor, 6600GT AGP at stock clock speeds, 1 optical drive, 1 hdd, and a pos 220w Compaq psu. This is the setup I have been using for the past year and a half and I have had no problems up until a few days ago. The core temps on the 6600GT only get into the high 60's to low 70's when I try to play a game and in the mid 50's at idle. I am guessing that my psu is the problem, but I am not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Try cleaning the inside with a can of pressurised air.

I just cleaned the inside of my computer about a week ago because I was getting ridiculous core temps. It helped the temps but it didn't prevent what happened. My friend got a new computer so he will probably give me his Antec 400-450w psu.(I don't remember the exact wattage) If I get it I will try it, but for now I'm stuck.

The games that I have tried, all of which mess up include: Oblivion, HL2, F.E.A.R., Battlefield 2, Chronicles of Riddick, Call of Duty 2, and Doom 3.

I'm not sure that you'd be able to run Oblivion, F.E.A.R, or BF2 anyways . . .

They all run fine. I can max out fear except with medium textures at 1024x768 and I get 50fps on the stress test. Oblivion chugs a lot in the forest, but it can still look good and still be playable. BF2 runs on medium at any resolution up to 1440x900 because I am so cpu limited. Well, they would run fine if my computer was working right...

I didn't mean for it to sound like I ran oblivion at maxed. If it did I apologize. I play it at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 since it doesn't make a huge difference. Most of the distance sliders are around the middle, give or take 1/4 of the slider. View distance is full, large textures,  shadows are disabled (doesn't look too different with them on to me especially for the difference in performance), hdr and other things on. Hope that clears things up.

GeForce 6600 shouldnt be run with a PSU of under 300w I belive. I installed a 6600 in my Compaq S5000T a while back (came with a 5600) and thats what I was told, anyway. My PSU was 250w, I put a 500w in it.

I had similar trouble with my old 6800.  Turns out a heat sink fell off.
