Okay so the PC i have now is

4GB DDR2
HD 5700
AMD 9850 2.5 Ghz
250GB x2
Vista
M2N Sli Motherboard
900W PSU

Basically, this conputer SHOULD be doing alright with certain games but I have no idea why but maybe age is effecting this computer. I have trouble running games like Rome:Total War (2004). Games like Battlefield 3, Batman Arkhum City, Skyrim and even Diablo 3 get laggy, shut down, or experience a huge drop of framerates. It doesn't help that the PC is SOO much louder since I got it. Even without any startup programs, it takes about 5-6 minutes on average for computer to turn on. Games that I onces was able to play like Crysis aren't really playable. I'm also planning on buying Rome 2 which is definitely going to be impossible to run on this rig now.

Anyways I do try to play it at high setting (most games that is) with resolution at 1920 x 1200

Anyways Christmas Bonus from my job is quite high and I kept aside about 1400 for a new computer. I know trying to upgrade this one isn't worth it, since I would have to buy nearly everything again even the (small) case. CAn someone help me build one, NO i don't want to a premade from website likes CyberpowerPC or Ibuypower. I want to build my own, it's just that I'm not very good with the specs themselves.

What I do know is I want a i7, DD3 Ram, and a decent GPU like GTX660 or HD7950. I am not good at picking out Cases (the one I have has a PSU at top blocking most air traffic), or Hard Drives/Solid State Drives. I'm too confused when it comes to choosing certain brand names since I don't know the difference,

Yeah, that what my assumption too. But the PC store I went to said that their would be a problem trying to upgrade it because of bottlenecking

Get us the exact model of your motherboard. If it can support phenom iix4's, you could easily upgrade to that and be alright for a while. The CPU would not bottleneck your computer. That would be the cheapest option for you. Outside of that, you would be upgrading the motherboard and getting a new cpu

The louder probably has to due with dust, etc. You should consider cleaning your computer out of dust and re-applying thermal paste.

I have a little cousin who cleans my PC weekly, as for the thermal paste, i do it yearly. Also the motherboard is

ASUS M2N-SLI

As far as model number goes, I don't know it. I have the original box it came with, but no mention of model number

BUt I'm pretty sure it's this one

Why do you need an i7, will you be doing lots of Video rendering or something else that requires lots of cores + ht? An i5 will take $100off the price tag and for playing games will do the same job

Well I don't know why I need a i7. I guess it can be answer the same way people say when they buy a sports car for speed they wont use

But in all seriousness, shouldn't a i7 perform better in games at max setting which is what I try to do? Like when I check benchmarks it performs better. Not to mention, I don't like buying computer, or consoles. I hate it and hate myself for it. What i try to do is buy one and keep it for 5+ years. I bought the one I have now exactly 5 years ago. I want to do to the same with expectations that I wont need to upgrade for a good 6+ years. I hate upgrading even more ;D

it support athlon II x4's and non be phenom II x4's

best i could find:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103885(new)

you will however need to preform a bios update to 5001 revision which is available free on the asus website

What's an estimate of performance that I would gain from this?

Maybe the i7 extreme but for example the 3770 and 3570 will more or less the same as the clock speed is the same but the i7 has a bit more onboard memory and ht. The memory will help a bit but ht isnt used in games and this is what you are paying for with an i7, and i dont see the use of ht in games in the life time of this pc - as game makers want the lowest commen denominator which in general are games that dont use ht. But i suppose if you have the money get the i7. I would maybe try to prioritise what you want só mine would be something like: Fast core GPU power Decent mobo Decent psu SSD HT Só as long as i have got everything in the list and have the spare $100 bucks then i would get the i7, but if it was the case of ssd or i7 then my choice would be the ssd but that is my personal preference, só make a list like mine and get what you feel is YOUR preference, and work out if ht fits into your budget

not exceptionally dramtic. in games that make use of four cores expect significant improvements. on the hole an athlon II x4 is equal to a core 2 quad q6000 series of the same clock speed in short a core 2 quad q6600 oc'd to 3.1ghz. very gud for games

To be honest, it isnt worth trying to salvage the mobo. All this will do is add to the cost of the upgrade. Replacing a very old amd quad with a slightly newer amd quad will only maybe prolong the life of the system by 6 months if that, and you will still have to replace the whole lot after, só all you end up doing is buying a very old CPU you use for 6 months. Bite the bullet now, 2013 is going to be a slow CPU year. Most the amd Stuff has been delayed to 2014 and haswell by all accounts will be slightly quicker (10% or só) more power efficient Ivy bridge só nothing major to wait for.

Don't bother trying to build a rig that last 5-6 years, after five years I have the same case, psu, hdd, and broken dvd drives. The rest are upgraded and swapped periodically.

I say 1-3 years for gpu, 2-4 years for cpu. Keep in mind 5 years from now you may have already lost interest and trying to build something that last that long is not cost effective due to depreciation.

This is good advice and basically the bane of gamers world wide - 5year builds are saved for parents who only surf the web

Well i bought the PC I have now 5 years ago during christmas. It survived so far and I bought it for $1100 premade and i never did any upgrades or replacements to it. Not sure if it was worth it but I was satisfied.

As far as upgrading goes, I want to have a rig to play Rome 2 when it comes out. The company always has a march release dates so by then I want to have a rig that can play it nicely. The PC I have now can't play Shogun even at low setting without huge FR drop (with fraps I get 20-30). IF I upgrade the PC i want it to have i5, not a small increase but significant that I wont be forced to throw down another $100-250 for another upgrade in 5-8 months. Because after I need an upgrade from what you suggested, I will still have to change the motherboard + CPU and case since it is too small

So If im going to upgrade might as well do it so it is foolproof for Rome 2

okay I think msot people ignored the fact that he has 1400 set aside for this, as with most people I doubt you want to spend all of it, this is what I recommend

i5 3570k

AsRock Z77 Extreme

16GB DDR3 1600

Radeon 7950

Corsair HX650(rly wish i couldve gotten this myself, useEMCJHHN45 as a promo to get $20 off)

HAF 932

1TB harddrive

Total:$1,084.93

We can totally drop tghe price or even increase it if you want, upgrade the video and add in a SSD if u want to increase it. and to decrease, drop the case to a mid tower and 8GB of ram.

Also I decided to use 16GB of ram because youre planning to keep this for 5 years, 16GB should suffice, and 8GB is also fine too though

I'm not the best at building computers and I don't know what other stuff I will need like a CD drive, Windows etc. IS there anything else?

yes you will need an OS, windows 7 64 bit, a monitor if you don't have one, kb/m if you dont already have, speakers if you don't already have. I would also say that you can save some money on the ram, instead of getting 16gb, go for 8gb instead, its alot cheaper. Instead of getting a full tower case you can save alot of money and get a midtower case. Instead of getting the modular power supply (which I wish I had) you could get a regular power supply and save another $30. He also suggested an SSD if you're interested for fast boot times but that would cost an extra $100 and isn't necessary.
