Hello good people of PC hardware. I'm building my friend a new rig and I need your help. First of all I live in Gaza so forget online ordering and the availability of parts here is *****. The most important thing is that he is a designer and he wants to use this rig for Photoshop, 3DMax and aftereffects. After surveying the market, I'm contemplating these semi-identical builds: 1st Mobo:FoxConn H55 CPU:Core i3-550 @3.2Ghz GPU:Zotac GTS450 1GB RAM: 6GB DDR3 Kingeston PSU:some 60$ 500w TOTAL:590$ 2nd Mobo:FoxConn H55 CPU:Core i3-550 @3.2Ghz GPU:Zotac GTX460 1GB AMP! edition (OCed) RAM: 6GB DDR3 Kingeston PSU:some 60$ 500w TOTAL:700$ I wanted to get him a decent CPU and a strong GPU in order to use it for his designing stuff. I looked at the i7s here and the price blew my mind. He has a 1024x1280 monitor and a case, KB+M, DVD and OS. He is a PC gamer too. The difference between the two builds is the GTS450 and GTX460 and it is 110$. Is it worth it? what do you think? Should I get him a strong CPU and forget about the GPU? Help me guys!

no point getting an intel build, go get an AMD based build, one with a phenom II 955, its about the same price as the i3 550. Also motherboards for the ph 2's are usually cheaper. You don't need a 460 1gb since his monitor only does 1024 X 800 resolution anyways, so just get him a ATI 5770, or if you can't find that then get the gts 450. To be honest I think you will be fine with an AMD 5670 or a geforce 240 gt at that low of a resolution.

What games does he play?

If they are older games, go with the GTS450, any newer, than the GTX460.

His first concern is designing. Is this a wise move? investing in CUDA GPU for photoshop, 3dMax...etc?

I've played around with 3dsMax, but I'm not entirely sure it uses CUDA to begin with, if it does, thats awesome, and I would change it to the GTX460, the processing power of the GPU would halve the rendering time if its a complex design.

I too don't know about 3dMax, but Photoshop and possibly aftereffect definitely use CUDA.

If he's going to be using it for design then you will need to increase your budget and I mean increase, you will need around 16GB RAM and a very good quad core at least a 2500k, if its heavy design his CPU and RAM will take the biggest hits so for now just look at increasing the budget. Also he wont get far on that res he's going to need at least a 20" monitor they are very reasonably priced these days.

If you read the OP well, you will see that I live in Gaza and parts are not available and are crazy pricey. A i7950+MB costs something like 500$ so there is no way I'd buy him that. My point is to try get him the best designing rig with such pricey parts.

gtx 460 is good, but it does not worth spending 110$ extra for it

since u are going to use ur pc in 1024*1280 resolution moniter

gts 450 is enough for u(it is 10% more powerful than gts 250)

also i can assume the condition of computer market there, because i live in india and i find only limited high end stuff in the market and e-stores sell the products in high prices.

Can you ask your friend to confirm if it uses CUDA?

Photoshop and aftereffects are childs-play compared to that, and it will be happy with just the i3.

Also, can you look at the i3 2100 and a h67 mobo? those are almost as fast as a CUDA GPU.
