Raizeen
Space Rangers 1&2? You can get them from Stardock for a pretty good price (in fact Space Rangers 2 is one of their 'Weekend Impulse Buys'). You create a 'character' and specify their background, and that determines your start ship. Then by fighting, mining, trading, etc you can upgrade your ship to new hulls, better weapons, etc.

Maybe you should try X3 Reunion or Freelancer but X3 is very complicated. If you want something simple try the Space Rangers series.

Freespace 2 might be up your alley. You don't buy new ships but are given them through the campaign and fight with a squad which has suprisingly good AI considering the game is 10 years old. Check it out on GoG if your interested.

Edit: The game maybe 10 years old but it is guranteed to run on Vista AND has a mod that makes it look like a 2008 game.

I agree with whiteblade. Desent: Freespace and Freespace 2 are both fantastic games. Dark Star One is not that great,Freelancer is better.

If you want something to play online, Eternal Scilence (HL2 mod, but its free) is good, but does involve some FPS aspects

I would really recommend X3: Terran Conflict.

It's kinda complicated but really fun.

Slim pickings in this category. My favorites are the X3 series. Freelancer is also pretty good. Space Force : Rogue Universe is meh but beggars can't be choosers. Do to a line in the EULA you can get Freespace 2 for free legally if you look hard enough.

Lol the game wasn't BAD but the voice acting was the worst I have ever heard of in any game PERIOD. Plus there are some major performance issues as when I started a game it ran flawlessly but towards the end my framerate was awful.

Space Rangers is ok. Homeworld 1 and 2 are awesome. If you like Star Wars- even a bit, try Empire at War. ... but those are really more space RTS than space sims.
