I asked this in the Civilization 4 forums, but that forum is dead. When my save file gets bigger than 300KB, my game starts crashing to desktop without an error message, and I keep losing game data. It's hard enough to keep track of my army as it is. Can anyone help please?

System requirements lab says my computer meets the recommended requirements. My specs are: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 1.8GHz (rated at 3Ghz), 960MB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 6150 (going to replace this soon) and SoundMAX HD Audio sound card.

It's only when your save file gets over 300kb? That's weird... make sure your drivers are up to date and all that jazz first, and then see if it's still happening. I'm assuming you pass the minimum requirements...

I remember having a similar issue when I was using a bad no-dvd crack, not sure if that was with civ4 or 3 tho. Remember to update the game, video drivers, and perhaps even increasing the page file/virtual memory size(or whatever it's called in english).

It means you have lots of hardware or you dont have hi speed but dont worry go to google and search "google web accleator" it may have to be corrected then you download the file and your computer will be on a google server which will fasten your hardrive and it wont pause your game as much or crash ! (download takes 30-60 secs on 300k speed)

First of all, your graphics card is terrible. You need to replace that pronto before anything. However, as stated above, you may have a bad install. You should be able to reinstall without losing save, but then with CIV saves don't matter all that much. Also, make sure that you don't have too much running on your computer, check for viruses and spyware. Go to download.com and search for a variety of free tools that will help to clean up your computer ( several good ones are pretty easy to find from the home page). Lastly, and you may already do this, but run all you system tools regularly like diskcleanup, defrag and scandisk - you should run them at least once a month if not more. And one more thing, remove any unused software from the computer and update your drivers. I would first look through the add/remove tool and uninstall any crap, including some of the commercial crap delivered with the system and then go through your root drive (C or D) and delete any skeleton folders.

CIV could be crashing for any number of reasons, but it's good to get your computer healthy anyway. you may have some sort of memory leak.

It is possible. Does your pc crash only on Civ4 or other games as well?

It occasionally crashes on oblivion, but I 've stopped playing that until I get a better graphics card, and when oblivion crashed, it gave me an error message, Civilization doesn't. BTW, Oblivion, Morrowind and Civilization 4 are the only PC games I have, I'm more of a console gamer.

It is possible that either your CPU/GPU are overheating or you got a dying power supply.

Make sure you have the latest version of the game.

Then, make sure your RAM is not corrupt, does your pc crap out on other games as well?

Then, you could just have a bad combination of hardware for this game. Aye it crashes on my perfectly working rig as well. :(
