Recently I tried to re-install Star wars: Knights of the old republic on my Windows 7 laptop. Somewhere near the end, even though the installation is completed and it freezed over. So I had to end task it.

Attempting to play it resulted in an automatic full restart. As in I barely got past the black screen when you enter games and it sends me back to the start of switching on the laptop. The one with windows 7 logo and logging in etc.

It happened 3-5 times as I tried to play it with different compatibility modes. Now when I try to play Call of Duty:World at war on LAN with a couple of friends, my COD does the same crap where it automatically restarts the entire laptop. I did manage to play Call of Duty:WAW LAN with my friends previously but the auto-restart problem started with the error on KOTOR's installation.

Oddly, other games I play are functionable and playable like Starcraft 2, Super Street Fighter 4 and Skyrim...

Recently found that my friends play age of empire 3 as well, and I went back to install it as well. Double clicking the icon, then going into the black screen before the game starts... It automatically restarts again...

I'm getting really frustrated by this, and it doesn't seem like it's a problem with my hard disk.

I tried switching off automatic restart on system failures.... And fortunately there isn't a BSOD, so I can rule out something to do with RAM (which happened to my old comp). Except it still gets frozen in a black screen...

I can only think of 3 possibilities.

1: Laptop is overheating.

2: Windows 7 installation is messed up, or needs a reformat.

3: Ram issues.

Hmm.... I doubt it's overheating since Age of Empires 3 (which I've played before on this laptop) runs totally smooth on all high compared to Starcraft 2, which I'm able to run right now...

I'm not sure about the RAM issues, but it seems kinda weird that games like Skyrim and Starcraft 2 are playable but not AOE3 and COD:WAW.

I've made a discovery though, any recently installed game I try to launch, sends me to the black screen of hanging and freezing. Same symptoms. It may be the installation process....?

Maybe, but after asking at another forum, they mentioned about whether or not I can change my desktop resolution and I checked. True enough, I got the same symptom where I get a black screen and windows restarted itself (switched auto restart back on). I then noticed that the games COD:WAW and AOE3 all are using resolutions different from my desktop. So it may be the resolution problem.

I'm just waiting for a reply or searching for a possible resolution that isn't a reformat to solve this resolution problem...

Try uninstalling your videocard drivers and reinstalling them. Also, are you trying to use a resolutoin higher than what the laptop screen is capable of?

I did uninstall and reinstalled them which was what the other forum suggested as well. When the drivers were uninstalled, I could actually switch resolution. But now after installing back the drivers, the resolution can't be changed again....

Also I did defrag like 5 times since the problem appeared.

Have you tried legacy drivers for your video card? As in, not the latest, but the one before the latest, or the one before that. ATI and nVidia both list legacy drivers on their websites, you just need to find them and they're all there.

Ok, thanks for the help guys, the resolution problem has been resolved apparently using device manager to update is not the best way. I found a 12.2 or 12.1 driver for my AMD/ATI card and now it's ok.
