well I have a 6800GT, with P4 2.8 Ghz HT, 1GB Ram, and I was thinking of overclocking it a bit so I can run my games a little smoother.  There is this option in the nvidia menu which lets you overclock, I was just wondering how much I should put it up to remain safe and if the "detect optimal performance" setting is a good thing to use?

I have my 6800GT OC'd to 437/1.15 with an Arctic cooler.  I recommend getting the arctic cooler before OC'ing your GT.  423/1.15 was the max with the stock cooler and the temp hit 72C under full load.

With such an old card, it could give a noticable difference in newer games that are more demanding then what you have right now.

Overclocking your components WILL smooth games out, so don't hesitate to not OC it. Just make sure you have cooler's to supply the OC with cool temperatures to stop overheating. I hope it all works out well (with correct coolers, and smoother gameplay)

Oh God I've got one of those collecting dust somewhere. They really should lock all threads older then 6 months and even that is a long time.
