You can disable some programs that get started at boot. Use Start > Run > MSconfig and see what you can find in the last tab. If you find something that really shouldn't start or where you are sure of that it doesn't do any harm, take away the check in the box. After your done, click OK and reboot.
480MB actually isn't all that bad if you've got an active virus scanner and a few bulky drivers like the Catalyst Control center and the Creative music thing.
