My guess, your power supply is on the fritz. How old is your computer, and what are the specs?

3-6 years old, that is quite a wide range. Im pretty sure your PSU is failing

99% of the time people have old computers that randomly shuts down is because it's overheating

Get some compressed air and spray out your case fans, cpu cooling fan, ram, graphics card and the motherboard.

I agree with the other folks...sounds like a bad PSU.  Might also be the thing is overheating...does the fan kick on and stay on before it turns off?

an old athlon 1800+ my father had also turned off like this, mainly when running 3d, it was overheating, he bought a new cooler and underclocked it (about 100-150mhz), but if you don't want to underclock, get a good cooler
