Which mobo is it? I'd try to find the E8400, if not then get one of the other E8XXX chips or the Q6600 or E6750.

Just get the best one you can afford. As long as it isnt a Celeron or Pentium D.

That's a good motherboard, nice choice. And yes, you'll likely need a different heatsink and fan. So make sure to buy the retail version of whatever processor you get so that it comes with the appropriate fan.

What's your budget for a new processor?

Yeah just make sure that the one you buy comes with a heatsink and fan. You can check by looking at the specifications.

i recommend the q6600. it's a cheap quad core at 2.4. it'll keep you future-proofed for quite some time. ;)

Buy a $75 E2160 and overclock it to 3.2Ghz. It benchmarks the same as a E6750 at 1/4 of the price. I did this myself. Read the howto here at tomshardware:

You do realise that not all of them are going to hit 3.2GHz? Most of them clock to only 2.8 From what i have seen in OC forums

why is the E4600 only around $15 more and yet much less reviews than the E4500? is the extra +0.2GHz worth it?

Which one would you get?

  1. Pentium D 3.0GHz + Rosewill 92mm = $118.99
  2. core 2 duo 2.2GHz + Freezer 7 pro 92mm = $151.98
  3. core 2 duo 2.4Ghz + Rosewill 92mm = $164.98

i may not be playing the newly released games so it dosn't really matter on the proccessor speed. but i will be playing Medieval 2 Total War on high settings. i am not going to OC either because then i will need more stuff.

You sure you want to spend the money to upgrade your brother's computer? I'd take the rest of those parts you bought and use them for a computer of your own.

i am building it for me in a way but money dosn't come that fast for me since i'm young. the circumstance is that his computer has a bad MOBO but every thing else is good. i am slowly upgrading it for my own use. i just wanted to get it running so i ordered a new MOBO and 2GB RAM but i misread the specs for the MOBO therefore i now have to get a new CPU along with it. i may not use it for high end gamming which would be nice but i already stuck enough cash into my 360. i will upgrade with time but please place your opinion. thanks

BTW could i sell my old computer parts somewere because i got a pentium 2.6 & a 2.8 i have lying around.

no its not future proof at all it uses the same artitecture as the core 2 duo series and its not even a TRUE quad core he'd be better off with a cheaper core 2 duo at a higher clocked speed by the time you need quad cores to run games well it will be outdatted

I'd go with Option Two.

I don't think that anyone would buy those, but try the Craigslist site for your area.

The E4600 is a later release, and more uncommon than E4500.

the E4500 got an multipler by 11 and the E4600 a multipler by 12...

so a 4600 would OC better...?

The high multipler and low FSB make them exelent for OC, one of the best... some E4500 go over 4ghz :S and most make about 3ghz on stock v-core.

E4500 is one of overcklockers favorites, cos there easy to match with Ram and mobo.

i´d go for opt. 2.

wait... I already got opt. 2. ;)

That should be fine... I would go for one slightly better personally, especially if you are not going to overclock. It comes with thermal paste on the HSF, so no- you will not need an aftermarket cooler.
