ok so currently i have a Samsung 40" 1080p tv, a ps3 and a samsung home theater 5.1 surround system but its hooked up via optical to the ps3 and not hooked up at all to my tv. so i want to upgrade my home theater to actually just a componet receiver that has hd capability so that i can run my ps3 via hdmi to my receiver and then to the receiver to the hdtv. how would this receiver do? http://www.amazon.com/Sony-STR-DG810-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B000OGA7Z8/ref=sr_1_6/102-4197388-9831366?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1180672632&sr=1-6

also i do not want to get new speakers i want to keep the sammy speakers i have now and connect it to the receiver... i currently have http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HT-Q45-Five-Disc-Changer-Theater/dp/B000F784UQ/ref=sr_1_3/002-0423468-9725630?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1173679342&sr=1-3... would it do?

Not sure about that receiver overall, decent price from an HDMI switcher I guess. I assume it has HDCP, so things like the PS3 will work with it.

But your main goal seems to be running PS3 HDMI to the receiver then HDMI from Receiver to TV, what's the your reason for wanting this? Are you expecting the audio to also go over the HDMI cable and then to the tv? The reason I mention the audio as I bet many low-end receivers will only support video for HDMI and not accept any audio. This means in the end you may still have to run optical to the receiver for audio. The amazon page doesn't give details on what or if the HDMI ports accept audio too, and doesn't clearly say if it's HDCP even though it mentions Blu-ray.

Hmm, for the sound from the tv to the receiver, wasn't clear about that. How do you plan to connect the audio out from the tv to the receiver? Does it have a "monitor out" with red and white stereo rca cables for say dolby pro logic at the best? If your tv is HD with digital stations it may have it's own optical out for digital surround sound if you watch HD shows and movies off cable.

Now the uncompressed audio thing, I didn't see anything about that on the receiver info. So I say your going to have to research more on that receiver and what do accept uncompressed audio over HDMI. As who nows, that receiver might not even accept any audio over hdmi, it might just be vide.

I think this receiver for about $326 supports full 5.1 PCM audio uncompressed lossless audio through hdmi and other formats according to a user review:
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR604S-7-1-Channel-Receiver/dp/B000HEFJNM/ref=pd_bbs_2/002-2159226-1899237?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1180676702&sr=1-2

I was using this guide on new audio format receivers with HDMI. For some reason though when it gets into the different levels of receivers, level 4 seems to have level 3 description and level 4's description is on level 5.

You want to wait for something with HDMI 1.3 in my opinion.

If you want quality, stick with Pioneer(Elite if you can afford it), Onkyo, Denon

If you're keeping your speakers (though I seriously recommend that as your next upgrade), then it makes no sense to pay for another set with that samsung set.

If you got serious money, Klisch, Polk Audio, Infinity.  For me, I'm prolly going with Bose

JBL or Polk. KLH is alright, but you'll be happy you spent a little extra money.

Don't ever buy Bose, they're absolute crap and really no better than the Samsung speakers he has You can get something that sounds far better for the same, and often far less money.

Okay.  Kodai, you might be right, $900 is a bit pricey.  I might get the JBL first Polk later.

Current Gen or next Gen?

Edit: Let me clarify:  I'm talking surround sound processing.  Current gen= at most, dts es or DD EX

Next gen:  DTS HD or DD (True I think, as there are  a few)  I think, so far Onkyo's got the only one out.

Double edit:  What's your price range?

Also, you'll like the JBLs.  Such a sweet sound.  :D

This is a great of next gen.  Price is steep.  I want it though:

That is definatley the brand new cadillac of recievers

Personally I'll be using player output. The DACs may not be as good, but untill they hit the $3-400 for THD and DTSM, I'm content to wait it out, and use the $$ I save to bump my speakers :)

Why don't you tell us what kinds of features in those recievers you find most attractive, and we'll find a happy medium.

Good advice.  Always weigh your options.

Cast a wider net.  Onkyo, I believe is great.  You can't go wrong with it.

Next to Onkyo, take a look at Yamaha next.

BTW, that reciever you quoted, it's a good.

Looks good to me,as a compromise. You can probably find it online for $400

If that's too pricey, go for it's little brother

I was over cnet and did some research. I love doing research like this btw.

If you scroll down, they said the sweet spot receivers happens to be the 705 and the 605, if you're on a budget.

How come you guys ignored this Onkyo 604, it passes through 1080p via HDMI and will accept 5.1 uncompressed PCM from the PS3. What more can you ask?

Well...

The 604 is on sale. And $350 ain't that bad.

I was conceentrating on next gen sound. And if you decide to go with this years model, and I might add that this Onkyo is as expensive as the pioneer, go with the Onkyo.

Upgrade to the 604:

You mean upgrade to the 705? But do you really need onboard decoding? Doesn't the PS3 internally decode and convert all those next gen audio for you to uncompressed PCM? Unless you really want 7.1 I guess.

You have to spend for a reciever then that accepts HDMI audio, since the PS3 cannot do 6 channel analog out, and the DACs in the reciever are going to be far superior to the DACs in any player.

This is the year of receivers with HDMI 1.3 input that can handle the HD audio formats.  Onkyo has one just out or coming very soon.  Other companies like Sony and Denon will have them out by the fall.  My current Sony ES receiver is less than two years old, but I plan on getting one of these new ones this year.  I have a PS3, so I want to be able to take advantage of audio like uncompressed PCM 5.1/7.1.

Speakers are the most important part of any audio system.  If you are wanting a receiver that can handle these HD audio formats, don't be cheap with the speakers.  I bought a Klipsch Reference series 5.1 set.  I think total I spent almost $3,000 on them.  The good thing about speakers is that they can last you for years.  The speakers I replaced with these new ones I bought 10-15 years ago.

The reciever is equally important, because you need to have a good signal before it gets to the speakers.

HDMI 1.3 recievers are about $1000 right now, and he said that was a tad pricey for him.

I went to cnet and found the bottom of the line of these receivers.  That would be the 605, and going price is $500.  About the same as the Pioneer mentioned earlier.

And the CNET reviewer does a great job at comparing all the Onkyo receivers
