i'm new to pc gaming and i was just wondering if clearing up background tasks really matters since that my new computer has 2gb pc2-4200 ddr2 sdram memory, and about 900mb is being used without any programs open. is that much memory supposed to be taken up or does it have to do with vista? if not, what should i close, cause i have no idea what to and not to close? thanks for any of your help.

That's normal for Vista. Vista likes to use your ram even when idling, so when you do something, it loads a lot faster.
