Hi everyone,

I'm building a gaming rig, and I need some help deciding which processors, hard drives, etc to get. I'm buying from here: http://www.centrecom.com.au

I'm willing to spend a maximum of $2000. I'll use it for homework, internet browsing and gaming. (I'll play games like FIFA 10/11, NFS Shift, and DiRT 2.)

Please give me some advice. Specify which CPUs and everything.

Thanks

what why shouldnt he make it himself? it really isnt all that hard just do some research online, i built my first rig last week and its working perfectly; as for parts with a budget of 2000 you could go all high end maybe an i7 930 a gigabyte UD3R motherboard 6 gigs of RAM as for gpu id actually buy something cheap right now and save your cash for when the 6870 comes out as that will be a great card (or so im hearing), PSU get a antec 1000W as its always good to have plenty of power, and for the case id buy either a coolermaster HAF 932 or 922 hope this helps some bit, but really if its your first time building you will be all right just read a few guides ask questions on this board and your sorted

Building one is EASY. And with that $2000 you can build a monster of a rig.

Still plenty of money to work with.

Make sure you get atleast a Dual core and a Quad Core at best. That's all I got :D Oh, and if you have little experience with computers, I wouldn't recommend you making your own rig.

Why would you even say that "Oh, and if you have little experience with computers, I wouldn't recommend you making your own rig." It's really not that hard to do, and everybody has to start somewhere, assuming that this is his or her's first time building.

As far as your rig is concerned, I'd wait to build like a month so you can get one of ATI's new 6XXX GPUs, or at least get the benefits of the sure to come price drops after the new cards start dropping, as Nvidia will more than likely pricing very competitively. If you must build now, get an AMD based system, with a Phenom X4 965 BE CPU, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, MSI 790FX-GD70 for your motherboard, and a GTX480 for your GPU. Throw in a 700W PSU as well as a nice full tower with good airflow for your case and you'll be set. But, like I said, I'd wait for late October, then build.

Hi guys,

Great responses, unlike my other thread. If any of you are interested, take a look.

Coincidently, I'm building a computer for my first time in Australia with a budget of ~$2000. I've been researching for a while but the exact parts I plan to get are listed on a different computer so I can't tell you my exact config. From the top of my memory, this is what it came down to:

- i7 950

- p6x58d mobo

- 6gb ddr3

- gtx 480 or 5970 or gtx 460 SLI (haven't made a final decision, opinions?)

- coolermaster rc 690 v2

- samsung 24" LED backlit

- 22x DVDrw

- antec 650w psu

with the gtx480 it came down to $2008 but from pccasegear.com rather than centrecom

I couldn't disagree more with this. I built my own rig 2.5 years ago with minimal knowledge. I trolled these forums asking questions, went to tomshardware and other sites to read up on best combinations etc. The build had a few hiccups which is to be expected for my first go around (mostly because the ASUS P5N-D is the worst motherboard ever made and I had it returned 3 times before finally selling it and getting an asrock). Anyways 2.5 years later my computer runs rock solid and still plays games at a decent level, but might be time for a gpu upgrade. As far as the processor in this guys comments, don't get a dual core. Dual cores while still ok if you own one (i have an E8400) I would never buy one today. Go get yourself a nice Core i5 750 or core i7 860 you'll get much more life out of those cpus.

if i where you i would hang on a month or two for the high end AMD hd 6xxx series before shelling out that much cash on a gpu setup (or buy a cheap gpu to hold you over) for the mobo id go with the gigabyte UD3R as its a great board, and i would go with a psu that has higher wattage say an antec 1000W (always good to have an excess of watts if you intend to sli/crossfire or overclock)

The only thing I have to say is you should be really careful when mounting the processor to the mobo. The shop I go to offers a free "quickmount" and test, because mounting it wrong can result in issues that warranties may not cover!

Don't get XP, get a 64-bit copy of Windows 7, and loose the sound card as your mobo has one built in.

Well if he has decent speakers he will get a much more vibrant audio experience with that sound card compared to onboard sound.

for a price tag of 2000 $ you can make a monster rig i prefer you to have a core i7 930, for graphics instead of buying a powerful card, buy two cards like hd 5850 or gtx 470 or 460, which are not most powerful but putting them together will outperform a gtx 480 or a hd 5870 or even a hd 5870. i prefer nvidia because its sli configuretion scales better than ati's crossfire x and also nvidia's fermi perform better in new dx11 feature such as tesselation.
