Alright, basically all I need is a headset that can allow me to soundwhore people and be immersed in the game. I've already eliminated Astro's as I have no intention of being, "MLG Legit". So, my choices it would seem are the Turtle Beach x41's, or the Tritton AX Pro, or 720's. Which would be better for a game like Battlefield 3 or MW3? I've heard that the AX 720 is actually better then the AX pro eventhough the pro costs more. I've also heard that the Trittons are heavy and clustered with wires while the TB's are wireless but have hissing noises.

I seriously just need a clearcut answer, rather then someone giving a suggestion, and then having the next post describe in detail about how awful that suggestion is.

Read the Headphone FAQ at the top of this forum and come back with any questions you might have. There are both headset recommendations and detailed descriptions of the various options available to you in that thread.

Good luck!

If you just want to be able to hear where people are and don't care about much else, get the AX 720's. Remember with this headset and the A40's you will have to buy an optical cable and a headset adapter if you don't have a newer xbox with an optical port included. I have owned the AX 720's before and currently own the Astro A40's. I'll breakdown both for you below, but your clearcut answer is already stated above. I owned the AX 720's for a little over a year before the left earcup completely lost all of it's sound, so I could only hear out of the right side. Before that though, I thoroughly enjoyed the sound that the 720's produced. Now I am by no means an audiophile so I can't compare them to some high end headsets with amplifiers and sound cards and whatnot. They sounded great for my first gaming headset. I could hear people using ninja in Modern Warfare 2 if they were close by. I mean they were just that good. Mind you I could barely hear them, but still. They also allowed me to better understand where everyone was in relation to me. Did they improve my game? Somewhat, but I wouldn't say in a drastic fashion. The problem with the 720's, besides breaking after a year, is the cluster of wires. I was using it for the xbox and it was just a cluster *&$# of wires. They're annoying but you get used to them. The most annoying thing about that headset though is the in-line volume control. It made me madder than anything else. It added extra weight to the side of the headset that the chord was attached to. It was very noticeable for me, especially when moving around. I truly hated it more than anything else. Maybe you won't notice it as much. I also forgot to mention the very VERY annoying hissing noise that the headset makes. It might happen when chatting, but I don't remember. Anyways, when no sounds are played in the game, or very quietly, I could hear a very audible hiss coming from the headset that would never EVER go away. It was very annoying. With the A40s, everything sounds better. There is no hissing noise and everything just seems a bit more clear. I also like the comfort of the headset more along with the boom mic and amplifier. I enjoy it a heck of a lot more. But I can't forget the problems. I've had two A40 headsets in the past year (got a second brand new one through warranty). I didn't even realize that my first headset was faulty until after I received my second one and noticed the drastic sound difference. With my first headset, whenever I twisted wires in the amp, the headset would lose sound in the left earcup and would only play in both if the wires were in a specific position. Also, whenever I adjusted the volume, each earcup would change volume at a different pace, thus making the game sound incredibly weird. I also had a problem with vibrations when people would talk to me online. Lastly, a screw fell out of the headset, dislocating the headband and earcup. I sent it in for warranty repair and a little over a month later got a new one sent to me. Talking about Astro Gaming's customer service deserves it's own section. Astro Gaming's customer service sucks, hands down the worst I have ever dealt with of any company. They tell me to send them basically everything (the amp, cables, headset) so they can send me new stuff. They send me back the wrong headset with nothing else. They didn't send me back my cables or mixamp, so I couldn't even use the headset (mind you it wasn't even the right one). So I tell the customer service rep and send it back then get the right one. Guess what, they still didn't send me the cables or mixamp even though I told them they hadn't sent them last time. So I keep message them and find out the guy that was helping me doesn't even work there anymore, and according to the new guy, it says on there computer they sent me everything, which they had not. Needless to say, they eventually sent me the right stuff, over a month later. All in all, I enjoy the Astro's more, but would probably look for something else if you are worried about dealing with customer service.

The AX 720's have two 40mm drivers and are no better at reproducing surround sound than any other two-channel headphone or headset. The AX 720 includes a processor that reproduces the Dolby Headphone effect which can, in essence, be produced on any headphone if you have the right processor.

If you want the Dolby Headphone effect, consider purchasing the Ear Force DSS or Astro Mixamp, which will both allow you the same effect while affording you the luxury of a wide array of traditional headphones.

Good luck,
