Practice :)
but really, that is what its all about. If you read some tips, aren't you going to have to practice those tips to get them to work?
I recommend buying Kevlar armor though, as it really helps. At least it did for me :P
Burst unless within about 10 yards.
For rifles: Aim for the chest unless at considerable distance or very close. Aiming at the head will mean you hit nothing if that first bullet doesn't connect. Once you're pretty good, you'll aim for the head and have a good snap-shot that gives a lot of headshots.
For Sidearms: Pistols love headshots.
Buy Kevlar. it's cheap and will save your life more often than you know.
Buy a freaking defusal kit if the Ts has planted the bomb even once in the past 10 rounds.
Get to know the maps by exploring them in single player before playing them much, so you get a feel for camping and meeting points.
If sniping, lead your target slightly.
Walk once the number of living players has dwindled, and LISTEN.
That's all I've got off the top of my head.
Use crouch and sneak (ctrl button you are more precise)
buy granades (you can damage lot of enemies or you can kill dozen of them if they are low health and packed together)
step (hold shift button and walk so noone can hear you)
listen listen listen (its almost as you have wall hack you can know where enemy is)
LEARN TO PLAY WITH AWP watch this guide to learn to play with awp
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6O7cI9xf00 SK VILDEN IS ONE OF BEST AWP PLAYERS!
Also look for other pro videos like matches from tournament etc
(I've only played CS:S, not CS 1.6, but this should still apply)
Learn the maps, and learn them from both sides. You will be much more successful as a CT if you know where the T's spawn, what paths they are likely to take, and what places they are most likely to hide in.
Learn your weapons. Different weapons have different firing characteristics, and have different uses. Sure, the AWP kills with one hit, but it doesn't have a crosshair unzoomed, and in tighter maps you'd be better off with something else. The AK and M4 are good all-around guns, both are very accurate on the first shot.
If you are getting creamed on public servers, start your own and play against bots. It will give you a chance to learn the maps, as well as a chance to practice your skills. It will also give you an idea of the main conflict points, the bot AI is decent on the Valve created maps.
As you start to get better, handicap yourself. I've played games with nothing but the dual elites, and while a lot lof times I get neutered, having the handicap makes you think things through a little, and also forces you to improve your aim and snap-shooting skills.
