I have a really old processor back from 2006 (intel pentium d 915). What are my options to upgrade to a better one? Note: I can upgrade my mobo to have the i7 chipset but I don't want to since i don't game seriously on the pc. BTW, my socket is 775

what is the model of your motherboard? If it has support for quads then you could get decent CPU on your mobo, but i doubt it has support for newer 775 cpus due to the board's age. However you can pick up a $100 Athlon quad and a good DDR2 mobo for $50-75 to keep your current ram and get a processor that is still a huge upgrade from your pentium D.

If you don't game, why do you want to upgrade your PC? You do CAD?

I mean I play quite a handful of games on the c (i.e. Dragon Age, ME Series, L4D2) not as many/hard on my ps3. BTW, how do i identify my mobo? the manufacturer and what it supports?

CPU-Z will provide you with CPU type/speed, ram amounts/type/speed, mobo model and socket type.
