Hi. :)

About to upgrade my gfx card to the XFX ATI Radeon 4870 (1GB) but need to upgrade my PSU as well. Only got 400W, when specs say that the card needs at least 450W.

Looking to buy 600W PSU but not sure on compatibiliy. Found this one and this one, but not sure if they would support the card.

If anyone could recommend me a PSU, that'd be fab. I live in the UK and would preferably like to spend no more than £25.

Ok I'm not a PSU whiz but you want to get a decent branded PSU such as Coolermaster or Antec. Its not always about having loads of watts. A good PSU isn't good because it says 600W when it could well only deliver half that power. You want to get a decent PSU essentially. I'm UK and I got this PSU http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150596 it can run my overclocked 4850 no problem. You'd probably want a higher wattage one for future upgrades though. Up to you. £25 is on the low side btw.

well, not half the power. they would get sued. :P. i think its 7-10% difference is the limit a company can have. anyway, cheap companies are not always bad. and what 400w do you have now, good brand? i got some chinese made MIOS that said 545 and it delivers 539, so... im using a 4890 and i have only had 1 problem witht he psu, and that was trying to fit it in my case. even if the 600w is cheap, it will provide sufficient power to the 4870. like i said, im using a cheap 545w for my 4890 and it works great. overclocking leaves something to be desired, 875/1025 XD

Thanks for the response, both of you! I'm not sure on the brand of my PSU, I bought the rig as a bundle a year ago when I only really cared about the processor and graphics card. I've not had problems with it ever, it supports my 9500GT fine, but I definitely want to replace it for future proofing and to be "better safe than sorry". I checked out CoolerMasters, their prices for 500W and above are a little out of my boundaries. The GFX card has taken long enough to save for. :P What I'm more worried about is dual connectors, or dual rails or something? Some of the reviews on PSUs mentioned that you need "dual" something or other to connect it to new graphics cards. I just want to make sure that whatever I PSU I get has the right components to connect everything up. :$

go for the 850 w azza one, it actually comes out to about 700 watts but it has a bunch of nice and tidy cables and such. and it costs as much as a 400 watt.

yea. 27a on 12v rails i think. dual mans youll do it no problem with the right amount of wattage. i think that if you dont have then needed amps, you need more watts, not sure on that tho. yea, the 9500gt is considered a media series card i think. definetly not gaming, and low power is needed. the card does need 2 6 pin connecters, and any psu usually less then 600w does not have that. some 600w+ dont either, but you can just get a double molex to 6 pin connecter for around 7$. any cheap 600w should do you fine

People say that about the 9500GT and yet I have no problem running any new games on max settings and my frame rates are still good. Thanks for the advice though, I'll have a look round some more. :D

crysis. far cry 2. gta 4? i have problems running crysis on my 4890 so. the 9500gt isnt that bad at gaming, albeit it is still a media card and as such wont perform like a gaming card. yea the 4850's are cheap. and good. 100$
