For over a year my computer froze sometimes or rebooted itself when playing games. My sound gave a low buzzing noise. This happened once a month or something, I didn't really have any problems with. But now everytime I start up a game I can play it for about 10 minutes, and then it freezes or gives me blue screen or black screen. I think this has to do with my PSU being broken. Ihave a factory made PC ( so I didn't build it myself) and I want to replace my PSU.

My question about this is if I can just replace the PSU of a factory made PC, and if I can replace it with any other PSU.

And I'm not very good with PC's, do you think I should replace it myself?

Thanks a lot for any help!

If ur confident that ur PSU is at fault then changing it is easy.

Just look at all the wires where they r going, take pictures if it helps u remembering. remove all wires and srew out the old psu. put in a new one and reattach all wires.. unless u do it urself ull never learn hoe to replace simple things...

u shud give it a shot,,but i think ur pc might be in warranty.. If its in warranty then dont open the case cuz u might void the warranty,, take it to the manufacturer then.

Have you checked your gpu temps by the way? Unless you have a mini form factor case all ATX psu fit. What are your computer specs anyway? so we can give the best option for your needs.

I have Windows 7 CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 550 @ 3.20GHz GPU: GeForce 315 No I haven't really checked exact temperature, but the case isn't warm or something. I don't know if that indicates anything? How can I check my GPU temperature? Thanks for the quick replies by the way.

Cant really recommend a PSU without knowing make/model, it might be one of those proprietary PSU's, I know some Dell's have their own.

If your problem only occurs while gaming then its the GPU most likely overheating.

yeah but is also gaming with a HTPC Video card a Geforce 315 is not even close to a 8800GTS released 5 year ago ain't it somethign like Geforce 210 ? or it more like a Gefroce 220 ? From what i know OEM Series 300 where exactly the same as Series 200 Expect A little Higher Clock (20-30mhz)

So Some game might have like 5-10FPS when he crash having too low FPS can cause instability if it do it for all game it can also be Driver's if you get Blue Screen of death then you can read if it was Caused by Driver Malfunction

you can check ur temp with PC wizard / Hardware monitor / GPU-Z (Sensor TAB) / MSI Afterbrurner
But i think unless ur gpu is Idling at 75C and full Load 90C it unlikely to be overheating unless there artifacting (Weird pixel / Weird Texture / System Crash)

The onboard AMD ATI HD4200 from the Onboard 785 of my nephew would Crash in various game till i put a Video card about 2 month after no crash after that same power supply check ur FPS with Fraps if you try putting game at medium 1280x1024 when the gpu can only handle 1024x780 All Low it could explain crash

But Lot of Factory Manifacturer PSU Found inside Even Alienware Desktop have like a Life Expetency of 2-3 Year so it can be also that or Ram. Check Memtest

I found about 28 time faulty DDR2 / DDR3 Inside Factory Build Machine within 1 Year of Purchase But some of them didn't just want to take the ram & test it and give you new ram .... they ad to ship the WHOLE PC FOR GETting some 40$USD RAM FIXED that do Zero Error In Memtest 86+ even after 6-8 pass which is about 5 hour

you can run BlueScrewnviewer to see ur recent BSOD and find result with 0X00000116/124 for example

but if you get no detailed BSOD report that tell it Driver / IF Gpu temprature is low Within crash / IF memtest86 show no anomly then it can be ur power supply but if the problem is not persitent IE : happening every few hour then it likely a GPU / RAM ISSUE or Driver issue

I have an Acer Aspire X3950, I don't know if that helps?

Ok, so I checked my temperature of my GPU, and it was at 62 C when I was not gaming. Then I fired up a game, and in 5 minutes it rose to 91C and then my computer crashed. Is my GPU overheating? Also I did the BlueScreenViewer, and all the recent faults were 0X0000116 or 124. Maybe it's not my PSU after all? Thanks for all the help again!

Definitely sounds like overheating to me, although 91 on a GPU shouldn't be enough to make your computer crash. If I was you I would check the warranty first. If not run HWMoniter from CPUID to check all of your components for over heating. Failing this, it could be driver conflict.

91c is fine, but thats a slim-line case you got there, if its not the GPU at fault, check the physical dimensions of your PSU.

in about 95% of pre-build PC Released ALL PSU Are 225W to 310W majory being 250-280W they have usually a Weird Slim Length Factor with a Energy Rating of Below 71% at 20-100%

He could buy some Rosewill PSU (newegg house brand with like 75% energy rating at low price) or Some PSU like OCZ 80+ Bronze Rating which is 81-85% energy rating in sales that can support higher gpu

however it seem is Video card is having driver issue he would need to go into Window Safe mode and Clean uninstall all is Driver Related product then reinstall newest Version that is Stable for Awful Geforce 300 series

also he need to remove all dust by blow some compressed air can on it it seem fan work since is idle is within normal temperature then again the thermal grease on the gpu must be all worn off since it go to 91C and would require replacing it but it alot of troub e

however doing all the trouble for something a 79.99$ video card get 3-4x more FPS doesn't worth it while a gpu of 99-150$ you get 8-12x more fps = the gpu capable of max at 1680x1050 most of game

next time i hope he learn is lesson and get is pc own build he pick the part on a grocerylist and get it assemble you save few hundred $ while get much better part up to 400% better then Factory Built
Better motherboard
Better CPU
Better power supply
Better Computer case With lot of Airflow
Better ram
Better Video card
all that while costing less then any factory build on any store unless it Blackfriday i saw some crazy deal

and you still have money left Cpu Cooler for overclock

To make sure the GPU is not the problem (overheating) Download MSI after burner and crank the fan speed to max then try gaming and see if it crashes.

http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

If it still crashes your problem is now driver/software related or PSU needs to be replaced.
