Buy or rent a cable box from his cable company. My HD cable box is $12CAD per month, roughly $10USD. If I remember correctly, the standard definition box was $4CAD.

If he doesn't have HD, then he can just buy a used VCR somewhere cheap ($10-$20) and use that as a cable box. If he wants HD, he needs a cable box from his cable company or an antenna for over the air programming.

Strange, only heard of HD-Ready tvs without digital HD tuners, but a TV that's TV-Ready? How can that be a tv since if it didn't have it's own regular tv tuner then it would have no need for channel controls on the front, it would become no more than a PC monitor with speakers. It hardly would need a remote except for volume and menu controls.
