Use whatever your friends use. Vent X-Fire and Teamspeak all work really well the difference being more people use Vent andTeamspeak while X-Fire is easier to use since you dont have to set up a server or remember IP adresses
Xfire is a gaming IM program basically. Any game supported by it will be detected when you launch Xfire, then when you launch the game, it shows up as you playing it on your buddy list. In game you can hit Scroll Lock +X and access your buddy list in game and talk to any friends that are online without minimizing the game. For online games some also have One Click Join where if your friend is in a server you can hit a button and it launches the game and automatically connects you to that server.
