I got my 7900GS a month or two ago, I was quite wary of doing so knowing that the 8600 was going to come out soon. But I took the plunge and jut got it anyway... looks like I made the right choice. My 7900GS will last me till the end of this year quite well, and then I can get my new build.

LOL and nvidia have really crippled(and then kicked some more) the 8600 why did they use a 128-bit memory bus !?!?

because a 256bit bus with its current clock speeds would have brought it's results far too close to the 8800GTS

Wow, great article. Thanks fot the post.  This looks like its saving me $50! I'm going to go with the 7900GS and get an 8800GTS when I can afford and use it better.

I bet NVIDIA is going to release an 8650GT/GTS with a 256+ memory bus when any competition comes to the market. It's all business.

Thats what I was thinking too. Nvidia won't let the biggest market (mid range cards) go to ATI that easily.

Exactly, since NVIDIA has a monopoly on the dx10 market, they are trying to split the gap between the 8800's and 8600's. If the performance of the 8800gts 320MB was only marginally better (which it would be if the 8600 had a wider memory bus), then there wouldn't be as much as an incentive for people to buy an 8800gts, thus NVIDIA doesn't make quite as much money as it could. This is obvious because it is obviously in NVIDIA's capacity to provide a 256 bit interface to the card, it's on much cheaper gpu's (even a frickin x1650xt).

When the hd2600xt rolls around, I guarantee you NVIDIA will upgrade the 8600 series to what they could've been right now, just to combat AMD. It's smart business, but it kind of irritates me that theyre playing us like a deck of cards (that's what we are to them I guess.) I just wish they would've just sucked it up and been on our side (the consumer) for once.

Meh, it is a great card once at 600/800+, but I bought it hoping to get something better than the 8800GTX a few months down the road when I had the money, but we all know how that one went. Had the money for a while now but I'm not going to give in and get something that's half a year old and the price hasn't really gone down, guess I'll just have to keep waiting.

the results from different benchmark websites differs by quite a bit actually, some reviews have 8600gt consistently outperforming 7900gs, others have 7900gs outperforming 8600gt.

hey that wasnt fair 256 mb vs 512 version? cheaters....... and they didnt say that they GTS can do hdr + aa while the gs couldnt. but anyway the GS is a Great card.

as it always was like this, the 7600GT weaker than 6800 ultra and 8600GTS weaker than 7900GS
