I have basic regular cable. I am looking into buying an xbox 360 and I would like to get the best quality out of it as possible so I figure I need an HDTV. I bought one after doing a lot of research but I still can't stand how much worse it makes the regular cable looks. I figure whats the point in spending all this money if cable is going to look like crap. I know I'll be able to enjoy xbox 360 on it but I would also like to enjoy regular tv on it. So what should I do? I'm probably going to return the TV but should I look into a CRT HDTV cause I havn't heard much about them. Do I have to give up on getting an xbox 360 if I want to enjoy basic cable?

what size is your tv, if its a big set then this is why regular cable looks naff, because the signal resolution is low, the imperfections on a larger set are also larger and easier to see, on a large tv regular broadcasts will look poor on any tv, HD or SD. I shouldnt return it but its your call, and your 360 will look miles bettter in HD.

Well doing some more researched I learned that I guess I need digital cable for all the channels to look better. I might be willing to get this and at the same time I suppose I can pick up those few (10 or so) HD channels that my provider has but heres another question. If I have the HD built in tuner do I need a HD box from my cable provider or is the box from the digital cable plan all I need?

well i'm assuming that your in the us, in which case i cant really hep, then digital tv is a bit different to how it is in the uk, i havent seen any HD tv's with built in HD tuners, but i can give some general advice, if you get digital cable you need to pay a subscription for the channels regaurdless of if your tv or their set top box is doing the decoding, i would say get the equipment from the cable company (asuming its free like in the uk) and ask the engineer when he comes to install your digital tv, he will best be able to help you with connecting everything up correctly, bear in min though digital tv isnt HD tv, its just the way the signal is transmitted and help prevent interferance, yu will need a HD subscription to recieve HD channels. The engineer will then either hook up your tv or hook up the cable box, either way everything will get sorted and it wont cost you any differently.

Yes you will need the box. The box can be connected by way of component cable by converting a dvi into hdmi. For your cable itself you will notice a difference between basic and digital. And then again between digital(480i) and high definition(1080i) I like the box because it's the only way to get ON Demand. Who's your cable company btw?

Dude, do NOT return your TV because television looks bad on it. The benefit of the 360 looking so great more than outweighs the poorness of cable. Everything will be HD on TV before you know it and you will be sorely disappointed with your decision to return the set.

Comcast. So I need to pay another montly fee for the HD box? If thats correct I have to pay a monthly fee for standard cable, then pay for the digital service, then pay for the remote and box, then pay for the HD box as well? If thats true than the HD box really isnt worth it because we don't get many HD channels here.

I have Comcast also. Yes, the box will cost you slightly more a month, but not much. My story with Comcast: They had a package deal which had the high definition channels, (locals plus PBSHD, DiscoveryHD, this one is well worth the look, INHD and ESPNHD.) So for $7 /month that's what I got. But then they had a package deal, including digital cable and the HD channels for $7. So now I'm getting digital cable at a low price plus the rental of the box. My favorite though is On Demand. There's HD content on there too.

Would you or anyone else here recommend an HDMI cable for my set top box to my HDTV? Or would I not see that much of a difference?

I did not notice that much of a difference. If my configuration changes in the future, I might consider it
