for those who want/need a 6 core cpu amd has delivered a WHALE of a dish. this is single handedly the fastest amd chip ever made and has decent ocage headroom. its cheaper to make as its simply a phenom II x4 with a larger die to cram more cores in. and finally its am3 so no need tor ip yourself a new one for six cores. but it is still a sizable chunk BEHIND the intel 6 core offering and ocing doesn't narrow the gap enough to call it a fair game comparing the oc'd amd to the socket 980x BUT with such an EPIC price gap this one is sure to be the former will be favoured by anyone worth their marbles and will punch the Bojangles out of any cpu demanding scenario.

all of the above being said this is possibly the biggest hit of a cpu since amd showed up on the radar wayy back when.. well done amd. but since you don't own the fastest thing alive title with this cpu we cannot give you full marks.. the phenom II x6 1090t nabs itself 4 stars on its shoulders.. out of 5

btw they got to bench this cpu one the brand new asus cross-hair IV truly a magnificent piece of hardware. once the bios gets a few kicks in the right direction and you would be laughing your way to the bank with this well purchased baby.

with a little amd mclovin and a kind of magic amd's dragon x6 platform may do the deed. we pray amd arrive on the scene in time before intel can muster for a counter-attack.

heres my feelings about this cpu summed up by one beautiful piece of audio..

your doing god's work amd :D

So in other words despite having six cores it still only manages to perform on par (slightly better in some ways, slightly worse in others) with the i7 930.

So it seems pretty useless to me. It offers no performance gains in gaming and for a professional they would be better off with an i7 (if your a professional the little extra cost will be nothing). The only good thing Iam seeing is that its good to see AMD's version of turbo boost making its way out and making extra cores mainstream will only help the industry in general by putting pressure on Intel to release more competitively prices hexa-core CPU's.

Great performance for the price, the second desktop hexa from Intel is coming and it should end up being much faster than the hexa offerings from AMD. Well at least AMD is cheaper. :P

It still wouldn't be a bad buy if AMD could guarantee that the AM3 socket has plenty of legs left under it.

yeah considerably, but then again AMD can pull another "Phenom II" (meaning they release the six core {phenom} and release another six core in a year or two {phenom II} that is better in everyway than the previous six core chips)

disclaimer.. i do not mean their names are phenom, those names are only used as relative examples, because of the performance increase from phenom to phenom II

reading this news 3 weeks after having built an i7 930 rig, i am still extremely happy with mine. no "buyers regret' which so often plagues PC owners

Meh, my Duel core Athlon II has not found anything that bogs it down yet. I don't do any type of media, so I don't need the extra cores, even the games that recommend a quad run flawlessly.

I'll tell you what, start pitting all the current CPUs agenst each other and start cranking the settings for games up, all of them start to line up in performance because the GPUs are the bottle necks even for low end CPUs.

All these CPU's used a Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 1gig.

I will not spend 100-200 more for 5 to 6 more FPS on the CPU.

For me it's about minimum fps your cpu has a much bigger effect on that than max fps.

i would have to agree with this..

i know that both min and max were increased going from the amd 6000+ to my phenom II 940. but im so glad my games do not dip so much... (most of the time i set a framerate cap of 60 or so fps.. so max doesnt really matter all that much to me.) what does matter is minimum and average fps.. (though max matters as well, just not as much)

Nice but not necessary for games at all and very few would benefit from a 6 core over a quad if at all. I'll be fine with my i7 for many years to come before i need to upgrade it the way thing are going.

Well dang... it's not saying to switch to amd. If you already have a core i7 or whatever stick with it. For those who DO NOT - phenomII x6 will give you performance on par with an $800 intel processor for what... $200. Only down side to it is that the game or program you're using will need to be threaded for multi core use =].

Eh perf is not where I thought it would be. I'll hold onto my Qx6700 for a few more years lulz. It's 4 years old already, and it's still relatively high end... awesomesauce.

You bought right when software as far games stopped advancing so rapidly in requirements. Someone with 8800gtx,q6600, and 2G of ram can still run games at high settings with decent fps and it will be a few more years before that changes which would have been unheard off a decade ago.

my firend has a q6600 and a 800gt with 4gb ddr3....he is also stingy and tight so he REALLY cant see a reason to upgrade. ati 5850's are tempting him since he got a 26" LCD recently though. BUT getting the new GPU will also push him to upgrade to win 7 (he still games on xp....), but he really only plays BF2 and BF:BC2

The only games your C2Q will stuggle at are poorly optimized and should not warrant a CPU upgrade. I doubt we will see any need to go past current Duels and yesterdays Quads for a long while. Until the next wave of consoles, or next year brings a ton of RTS games.

Exactly, the plan is to get another 2-3 years from my Q6600 :)
