It's cool those who cared enough to even respond are posting rather recent and modern games as their favorite .. it means games are progressing and evolving with fans.
For me I always enjoyed a good fps to be online .. but find pleasurable ones to be rare .. maybe its because the online environment is so fluid and apt to move and change and only becomes crystallized at its peak a very short time.
Though Left4Dead and Team Fortress 2 are stunning games to look at and offer unique and thrilling gameplay, I haven't found my stride in either, could just be to old and slow :p .. truly more probably thanks to lack of time to really commit.
I would answer Quake 3, Jedi Outcast, Battlefield 1942 .. making me rather old school I'd imagine .. but at their hieghts those games offered me some of my most intense fps battles.
For singleplayer try the Half-Life Saga (includes 1 & 2 plus episodes), Deus Ex, Aliens vs. Predator 2 (marine campaign), Crysis Warhead (yay Psycho !)
