You...want to play Eve? Ok...Just be prepared for a SLOOOWWWWW experience. Very slow. It takes about 20 real life minutes to hyperspace jump to certain places and takes hours and even DAYS to train one skill. One skill. I couldnt play the free trial for more than a couple days. I had to go off and entertain myself while I trained skills and hyperspace jumped. Boring game, I cant believe I had to go do something else while I played a video game that was supposed to be fun in the first place.

Thanks for spreading highly skewed information.
Anyway EVE online has been active since 2003 and from the looks of it, its only been growing bigger, not getting smaller. BTW what rig do you have? Because I highly doubt that you don't meet at least the minimum system requirements.....unless that is your PC Is over 5 years old or something.

well its a HP pavilion notebook..nothing fancy and it kinda came with nvidia 7200 which i believe is not something very strong..i am thinking of buying a new computer but i would like to buy one of those gaming computers..thoughlike an alienware or Dell XPS..
Wont let me edit....
Eve Online will be around for atleast the next 10 years and even more IMO. The game has been constantly growing and evolving and with ambulation coming up next year i think this game has endless possibilites.

Exactly. EVE is one of the very few (Perhaps the only) MMO's that has constatntly been growing rather than shrinking in terms of player base and the game came out in 2003 to boot. The Ambulation expansion will open up so many possibilities to current EVE users it's not even funny. I can't wait for it to come out.
To the OP, your laptop is more than good enough to run EVE. You'll most likely be able to run it close to maxed out as well so there's pretty much nothing to worry about. If you want to try out the game just go to the site and get the 14-day free trial. Just a warning though, don't come into EVE with the interpretation that it'll be like WoW or something. Post again and I'll tell you more if you want.

Lol, that's nearly word for word what I was thinking!!! EVE is my favorite MMO out right now. But unfortunately with odd working hours and a 2 1/2 yr old at home, I don't have the time needed to really get the most out of it.

I agree with him. I think it's waaaaay too slow paced. But obviously a bunch of people see something good in it. I would say it's safe to say there will be a pretty consistent community around for a while.

I miss Earth & Beyond, it was superior by far. Though to answer your question, it should be around for at least 5 years.XBSHX
No it wasn't the game was a buggy mess and lacked any depth, it was closed down because it was making now money because noone wanted to play it.

The main difference with the EVE online versus other MMO's is that it doesn't hold your hand throughout the entire experience. Many people(Myself included) come into EVE online expecting the server to give you a specific direction to take.(i.e. for WoW it would be the various quests and for guild wars it would be the SP campaign) So they come into EVE online with these general misconceptions and come out of the game saying it's sucks or it's slow.(like the poster below the OP did) EVE is a true sandbox. Once you finish with the tutorial you're left alone and it is you tha makes the decision on what to do next. From all the MMO's I've played so far EVE is the only one where you can pretty much be whoever you want to be and take whatever approach you want to take toward becoming successful.
For example, when I first played the EVE trial I did a few agent missions(i.e. quests) and then quickly joined a corp(similaar to a guild, but different at the same time) from there we did all sorts of self made missions like mining runs. Sadly a few weeks after my trial account was over my corp went to war(Yes you can wage war in this game) with another corp and of course I couldn't be apart of it. My character at the time was mainly business focused as I was intent in starting up my own corp. Now I'm making a bounty hunter character and a pirate. (Pirate players essentially do all the bad things in EVE online, meaning they steal your loot, destroy your ships, and more or less wreak havoc, it's fun, but you're pretty much living on the edge because as you become more notorious for your actions more and more players and corps know about you)
Myrkan also said something about taking 20 min to get from one place to another. This is true to a certain extent. EVE is by and far the largest MMO in terms of size out there so it is very possible to ake 20 mins to get to point a to point b, but remember what I said before, it's pretty much your choice. I sometimes take long trips in order to get a great deal on some ship equipment I found on the market(Which is 100% player driven BTW) I could find one relatively close to my location, but being the cheap bastard that I am I opt not to. If you take a 20min trip and complain about it afterwards it's pretty much only your fault as there are always shorter alternatives to getting the same thing you want.
Skill training is also completely different than most MMO's in that, instead of grinding you simply pick a skill you want to train and wait a certain amount of time for it to develop. The time needed to train skills become longer the more you invest in leveling a skill. So yes in the end it can takes days to train one skill, but it only gets to that point if you solely invest in leveling one skill multiple times.
There's a lot more I can say about EVE, but I think this should give you a basic picture of what to expect from the game.
What turns me off to this game is that it sounds like you can "play" the game without actually really playing it at all, the way the skill system works. I mean, it actually sounds more effective to simply wait until your skills get to a decent level before you even start really doing more than logging in and picking your next upgrade. What am I missing here?SpaceMoose
The game is a lot more focused on the money and equipment you have rather than your skills. So you can do that, but be prepared to die a lot in the long run.
My biggest tip is come into the game expecting to play it for a few years and know it'll start off slow, however grt yourself into a good player corp and they'll tell you alot that'll help you. Remember Eve Online isn't for everyone and it's a very niche game so it'll only appeal to like 1 in 1000 of people, so don't go in expecting to love it straight away. I know it took me awhile back in 2003 to come to like in, infact was around a month when i started getting the hang of things when i finally started to enjoy myself. However my patience paid off and i started to enjoy it, what kept me playing was what fun i know i'd be having once i got myself started, also EVE's amazing atmosphere.
Also EVE is a game where you can have everything and then lose it in 10 seconds lol. Just the other day i was transporting 590million ISK worth of trade goods when i got ambushed by pirates and lost it all. Obviously thats not that much money to me anymore seeing as i'm flying captial ships, however it's just an example. Dying without a clone will lose you skill points aswel so remember before you leave the station, always clone and don't go anywhere dangerous unless you know you have enough money to make another clone incase you die.

Not really skewed. It does take a few minutes to travel places, and it does take upwards of days (weeks and sometimes months, even) to train skills.
With that said, the game is not boring. Its a more relaxed MMO, thats all. And its not skill or gear dependent like other MMOs. You can hunt pirates and mine right from the get go. The community is quite possibly one of the best of all the MMOs; people are helpful, and there are lots of great corporationsd (think "guilds") to join.
If I didnt enjoy WoW so much,EVE is what I'd play.

I said it's highly skewed because even though it can take months for a skill to level up and you can travel 20min to get to a destination, the poster was acting as if that's all that's going to happen from the get-go, which is entirely not true. I explained it to the OP in my rather long forum post a page back :P.
BTW have you joined a corp yet?
Generally when you train skills in Eve you only train the ones you need which take 2 or so days max. Any skills that take a month to train and leave you waiting for them then obviously you havn't learnt how to play the game and your trying to advance. It's like trying to train straight for a titan or something, really stupid lol. People have to egt out of the mind set that frigates suck and to go straight for the big ships, that's why you're left waiting a month for skills to train, specially if you have no implants and learning skills.....
Take your time and only train smart, you can get into a Battleship in days, it's going to be useless howeevr cause you'll be using small turrets which i see alot of and people wonder why they're not having fun. When i cam into the game i spent about 3 months in Frigates and then trained up to Cruisers and then trained into Battleships around 9 months after playing once i had Cruisers mastered and could play teh game.
You also need to work out what you wanna do before you enter the game because the attribute bonuses you get are vital to the skills you want to train. Say if you choose a industrial attribute setup and then try to train in gunnery then it'll be soooo much slower. Yes Eve isn't a fast paced game but it isn't "that" slow paced and can be very rewarding. The same amount of time it takes you to level to 60 in WOW will be about the same amount of time it takes for you to find your feet in EVE. Also remember that if your not going to bother finding a "GOOD" corp then your not going to have fun because EVE is a mmorpg and thats a game designed to be played with others. It's not WOW which has a attitude of "playing alone together" and if you don't want to be forced to play with other people then i suggest to play a single player game.
EVE is...different. Battles feel slow paced, but can be very hectic also. Corp battles are insane, alliance battles are more insane. An alliance is a group of Corps that ally themselves together. (FREGE FTW!) If you want to PvP, I'd suggest looking up some PvP battles on Youtube or the sort to see what is involved and what kind of hectic I'm talking about. If you like micromanagment, EvE is for you...if you don't...try it out anyway, it might just convert you.
One piece of advice for when/if you do start playing: Stay out of Juno on weekend afternoons...lag fest.
