I'm in the market for new floor standing speakers for my home-theater. I'm using a 3 month old Sony 660watt receiver. I saw two different versions of Sony's floor speakers, the SS-MF550H and the SS-MF650H. Both have a 1" Tweeter and 3.25" Midrange. The difference is in the woofers. The 550H has one 8" woofer while the 650H has two 6.5" woofers.

Will the single larger woofer sound better than two smaller woofers? Or will the two 6.5" woofers have a better range?

Secondary question, is there an advantage to using the same brand for speakers and receiver? What about speakers in the system, having different brands for rear and floor speakers?

i'll try to answer your secondary question. its not always a good thing to buy the same brand for everything, though coincidentily it may be the best choice. for example, for receivers, brands like Yamaha and Denon are really good, but you wouldn't pair those up with speakers of the matching brand because theyre not that good. personally, the sony receiver is ok but i wouldnt bet on sony speakers being too good, especially floor speakers. i dont know any specific models of the top of my head but shop around more. i hope this helped.

it's common and actually works better to not try and match speakers and recceivers. However mixing speakers isn't a good idea unless you take the time to voice match them. All speaker manufacturers have a certain sound and if you don't pay attention to how an individual speaker fits in with the rest of the system it's going to sound out of place. That's why it's easier to stick with not only the same manufacturer but also the same series of speaker.
