So im pretty good when it comes to tv info since all the research and work i did in getting my tv but i blow when it comes to home theater systems..anyways heres whats up:

i currently own a 40" 1080p samsung tv

its hooked up to my ps3 via hdmi

i want to buy this http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-HT-Q45-Five-Disc-Changer-Theater/dp/B000F784UQ/ref=sr_1_3/002-0423468-9725630?ie=UTF8&s=audio-video&qid=1173679342&sr=1-3 home theater system ( i dont even need the DVD player)

My question: what else do i need to get the surround system to hooked up to my tv? do i need another HDMI cord to get the best sound? does the system even have a HDMI slot? thanks for the help

I believe the best sound you can get would be to use an optical cable between your ps3 and that system. There are no HDMI inputs on that receiver.

ok this is what you need to do. HDMI carries both digital audio and video in one cable. since you dont even need a dvd player, just buy a stand alone audio receiver (which would be much better) that has HDMI input/output. also buy some surround sound speakers for the receiver.

connect one HDMI cable from the input of your tv to the output of the audio receiver. then connect another HDMI cable from the ps3 to the input on the receiver. then just connect the speakers to your receiver (obviously) and your all set. you'll have full digital picture and sound with just two cables connecting everything together (plus the speaker wires and power cables.

what does all this do? the audio receiver acts as the center of your home theater system. you connect your audio/video sources to it (ps3, cable/satellite box) and it displays the video source on your tv while outputting the audio through the speakers. through the receiver you switch to different outputs.

i'm 99% sure on my directions. feel free to correct me:D

The thing with budget a/v receivers with HDMI is that they are passthroughs only, so they're just acting like a HDMI switch. The receiver won't be using the audio signals from the HDMI signal.

This man speaks the truth.  Here is the best receiver that I have found that will take PCM over HDMI that is somewhat affordable: http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR604-7-1-Channel-Receiver/dp/B000HD7FGM/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6166450-1722354?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1173744938&sr=8-1
