Let me see
Graphics: Homeworld (3D graphics were extremely nice)
Gameplay: Tie. Homeworld had great gameplay throughout and SC was improved on the used map settings maps.
Atmosphere: Homeworld
Units: Tie. Starcraft had great balancing and interesting units while Homeworld units may be more generic but they would tell you how the battle is going as they fought. (Sir, we cannot win this battle.)
Music: Homeworld. The music fit every mission and the end credit music with the slides was amazing.
Story: Toss up. I enjoy both the stories and love both universes so I am unable to choose.
Replayability: Toss up. Lately I may not be playing SC as much as before but both games can easily drag you back for fun. Hell, I've finished homeworld four times, Cataclysm six times, and Homeworld 2 twice. SC I've finished each campaign once but invested tons of time in the multiplayer.
So in the end, I'd go with Homeworld but I enjoyed both games.
Homeworld would have been better then Starcraft if Relic actually knew the importance of multiplayer.. Sadely it seems like they didn't realize this till Company of Heroes.sSubZerOo
Hmm? I recall the multiplayer experience being great. Sure, you didn't have the multitudes of different game types but playing a 8 player FFA was epic. Have you ever seen 8 fleets converging towards the mineral deposits all at once? Once you have, you will see how well done the multiplayer is in Homeworld.
I prefer Homeworld. To me, Relic is the lead RTS developer at the moment..
I like both games though.

Starcraft by a huge margin but I respect Homeworld because it nails down presentation, atmosphere and unique gameplay so damn well.
The fact is that Blizzard , Westwood & Chris Taylor's Total Anihilation ( CEO of GAs Powered games ) have all invented different styles of RTS's .... in 1999 Relic enterteinment brought us an entire new style/expirence of RTS & with a great story maybe better than STARCRAFT's ...the following years Relic the hotest new RTS developer brings us Homeworld 2 with the same great story & a much more superb interface ...than they take the styles from Blizzard & Westwood & perfected them iwth titles known as Warhammer 40k & Company of Heroes .... & now for all we know THQ has taken the Homeworld franchise back from Vivendi ( lamers who stoled the FEAR name & tryed to steal HALF-LIFe from VALVE !) because they know that it is a cash cow & Relic is more than happy to develop may the end of the trilogy of Homeworld ! As for Blizzard only from the 1st gameplay trailers of Starcraft .... we can easilly see that it feels more like an expansion pack in 3D but with the same narattive story & great presentation .....they kinda lost theyr touch in gameplay ... for singleplayer games i think its because of WoW !
Starcraft wins for me because of superb multiplayer.

Indeed. Homeworld is fun and everything but the multiplayer is far from addicting. Starcraft still has a large online player base (I assume larger than Company of Heroes and Supcom). Just find a friend, create some 2vs2 matches and let the good times roll.

Yes butttt their multiplayer service was subpar, it had little to no customization, game modes, and hardly any maps.. Fastforward to Starcraft where you could do just about anything and everything with their multiplayer services.. Thats one of the reasons why its so successful even to this day.. And tehre is at best 10 people on the all 3 homeworlds combined.
There is no comparison. Zero!
With that said, Homeworld is a better game, Starcraft is more popular though.

I'll admit that there wasn't much customization and low numbers online but remember, not many people are willing to spend hours playing the same game. Reason why Starcraft did so well. No matter your RTS tastes, SC catered to everyone in some form or the other.
But no matter what, I did find the multiplayer/community better on Homeworld then SC.
Homeworld introduced a great engine, and had amazing graphics and beautiful music, but its psuedo-sequel, Homeworld Cataclysm was much better as an actual game.
i also preferred homeworld.
and i was just going to ask about homeworld 2... whether there was one and how it compared to the first...
that said, relic became pure pwnage for me with company of heroes. the more i play it, the more it ekes its way into my top 3 games of ALL TIME. were talking on the level of super metroid and deus ex here...

Thats just it.. One of my largest pet peeves is the fact homeworld offers so little... Don't get me wrong homeworld was a tremendous game.. But its multiplayer is lack luster compared to Starcraft.. One there are roughly around a dozen maps.. Top that off space is EMPTY meaning maps in homeworlds system wasn't very forfilling.. There were no bottle necks or any such things... The two races were pretty much carbine copies of one another with one unique fighter and frigate.. This wasn't a bad thing but compare it to Starcraft where there were 3 vastly different races.. Not to mention there are some hunderds of maps that could vaslty change the game with numerous choke points or certain parts being out of reach till your further down the tech tree...
Starcraft!! Awesome single player (especially in BW), revolutionary multiplayer maps, 7vs1 backstab. I even made a map called Sky Assault where you had to choose between making one of 6 air units or get minerals for upgrades. The goal was to destroy the enemy's bunkers. After destroying 20 planes, you had a unit which allows you to choose one of many heroes, each one needing a specific number of units. Had lots of fun making this and playing on it.
Homeworld never interested me so I can't comment about it.
I'd go for the one that became a national sport.
Gameplay > Graphics
SKaREO
Definitely. Both games are extremely old looking anyways, it's not like Homeworld's graphics give it any advantage whatsoever in this day and age.
homeworld alllllllllllll the way, the story, setting, atmosphere, music all beautiful, well crafted and completly origonal. alot of starcraft things are completly ripped off of warhammer 40k. RELIC > blizzard
right now i think that relic is the lead developer of stratagy games.
but i also love warcraft 3 and diablo XD
