Just noticed the open beta is happening on PC. The Steam reviews are mixed, but most of the negative ones are complaining about how it isn't like the 20+ year old game they remember. Anyone give it a go? If so, how are you liking it?

Played it for 5 minutes, my observations
- Game is either really unoptimized (not getting >60 FPS on a 980 Ti), or capped at 60 FPS
- Game has built-in mouse acceleration that you can't turn off. Also, the mouse control feels awful.
- Despite having an option to turn off voice chat in the menu, it doesn't work.
- No option to turn off AA
- Graphics are kinda ugly
- Game stutters and hangs for a couple minutes on startup.
- You have the movement speed of a slug
So yea, might try it again, but probably not. Any arena shooter with crappy feeling mouse input is basically a waste of time in my book.
Battleborn beta is far better.
Is there any chance that I'll like Battleborn if I thought Borderlands was stupid?

They're not even remotely the same genre lol. Battleborn is MOBA + tower defense + FPS.
One of the most console-safe arena shooters I've seen. Rocket Launcher does crap all damage, just use the shotgun. There's no music during match?
The speed is is not fast enough, makes me want a dash ability or something similar to UT. Is there any collision against enemies? I something feel like I have an opponent kill me from the inside.
Only 4 weapons in beta so hopefully there's more in the full version. Loadouts are just, egh. Too safe.
So yeah I'm not impressed with it, they played it too safe for the console crowd. You don't want to half ass an arena shooter.
I just read that they are going to have weapons as DLC. Guess I'm out. Wasn't the worst game I've played, but that model prevents me from even buying the game dirt cheap.

maybe sp will be decent but this shows how far games have come.
So boring to just run about mindlessly shooting others with minimal thought or tactics....
I've felt the same about most arena shooters. Sometimes its nice to have mindless fun, but something is missing from this game and the DLC model is atrocious.
yeh i put it off and put on r6 siege also free this weekend, coincidence? me think not haha.
And man different league, you have to think and the slower pace increase tension.
Doom type games are long gone...even COD a bit samey but its slower pace and require some more thought, at least bf series also far more tactics...this game is pointless in MP

Yah I was getting 60fps at 1440p on a single 970 (had to disable sli because of performance drop).
Even with a smooth 60fps the mouse aim was horrible and you cannot change it.
They're not even remotely the same genre lol. Battleborn is MOBA + tower defense + FPS.
MOBA's are typically tower defense games in nature so that's a bit of a redundancy. A MOBA FPS to me sounds like an FPS with RPG elements, which is what Borderlands was, so it sounds like I shouldn't bother - I don't think Gearbox is very good at that sort of thing.
Anyways, I wish they would've unlocked the advanced options for this open beta. Apparently the FPS cap is in that section, and can be adjusted. It's just no fun playing an arena shooter at 60Hz on a 144Hz monitor.

A MOBA FPS (Battleborn) and an RPG Shooter (Borderlands) are two completely different styles of games. Only thing in common is that you shoot guns in both.
It's entertaining. But it's not doom. It's halo with a hellish themed makeover. Putting a 2 weapon max load out system was beyond absurd. Movement is a bit slow like quake 2. I just hope they don't do something stupid and put a sprint button in. Rocket launcher is nothing like original doom or even quake 3. It feels like half life or quake 2 or even like destiny rockets (in terms of projectile speed and rate of fire). At least we don't have to reload. Characters can't jump that high lol
Haven't played it but the more I learn about it, the less I want to play it. The experiences in this thread support this belief. I will probably buy it (it will have singleplayer yeah?) for the campaign but that's it.

They're both cartoonish shooting games with RPG elements and a focus on skills and abilities over gunplay. One takes place in a boring campaign, the other takes place in a boring tower defense setting - to me, it's the same difference, they're both cartoonish shooters with boring gameplay elements
Anyways this Doom beta was a massive failure. 35% on Steam is pretty painful for a free beta.

You done lost your damn mind. Borderlands and Battleborn are not even remotely similar. MOBA and tower defense are two totally unrelated genres. Tower defense is building certain types of towers to protect against waves of enemies. MOBA's are defending your bases using various types of characters with no base building at all.
Anyways...
Overwatch beta > Battleborn beta > DOOM beta
Overwatch beta just started today again and it's greatness.

ah, yes. i need to get my hands on that game. looked alright in some gameplay videos.

At least I can condense quote chains. MOBA is competitive form of tower defense. You're defending towers (and base), upgrading your characters (who defend the towers), and upgrading your base/minions who defend your towers and attack the opposing towers. I'm not sure if you've played many different tower defense games but they come in many different varieties, and they're basically the same thing as MOBA's except they're cooperative instead of competitive. Take Dungeon Defenders for example...
Do you know what the difference between this and a MOBA is?
You're playing against each other. Tower defense games aren't all about building towers. Consider your mind blown.

DotA is a competitive form of Plants vs Zombies? You're just being absolutely ridiculous and trolling at this point. They are not even close to being the same genre.

The game would be graphically good looking if it weren't for the fact that the textures in the multiplayer levels in the beta look awful..
The game itself could be okay but as stated before, it's missing features. And implementing loadouts to an arena shooter isn't going to make the franchise progress.
I really had my hopes up for DOOM, now I'm depressed :(
That's like saying "it could be good, if it would only be actually good".
Didn't like it all all.
- Slow for a Doom game.
- Unbalanced weapons (what happened to the rocket launcher :( )
- Poorly optimized performance
- Unnecessary Load-outs, Call of Duty/Halo gameplay that doesn't belong in Doom.
Disappointing... Hoping the single player is decent..

Wat?
What do you think of the new Unreal game? (the pre alpha one as they claim it is)
