im trying to buy a video card but im on a budget and trying to get most for my money. just want to know how these two types of memory stack up as in a 256 mb gddr3 compared to a 512 mb gddr2 video card or 512 mb gddr3. wat would be my best option? any suggestions would also be appreciated on good value video cards
It is obvious that the 512ddr3 card is the best but if the diference of price is big thanis not worthing because the performance between gddr2 and gddr3 is slight
what actual model is this card? Waht resolution do you play at?
Pay attention to the graphics card model not the memory, the amount needed is diffrent depending on the resolution you play at, the memory speed makes very little difference to the speed of the graphics card.
Do you think that a slower-clocked DDR2 card that almost certainly has a 128-bit or lower memory bus (I don't know of any recent cards that use GDDR2 and have a higher memory bus) will be able to handle that resolution at all? More VRAM may help higher-end cards at higher resolutions, but they're not going to help a mid-range or low-end card with slower memory.
What video chip are we talking about here? As Gog stated, there's no point talking about the kind of RAM the cards may have if we don't know what GPU is matched with these.

I'm assuming they're all the same card - then again, perhaps I shouldn't assume.

GDDR2? Not even close. GDDR2 cards are crippled speed-wise. Not because the RAM is DDR2, but because the cards themselves are usually underclocked.
The question was 256gddr3 vs.512gddr2. Do you think 256 Vram will be enough for 1600x1200 or more??
Yes, one doesn't need 512MBs of memory even for higher resolutions. Maybe if you like 16xAA or something, then you may benefit from it... but 4xAA is more than enough for high resolutions.
Not to mention the only 512MB GDDR2 cards out there only have a 128-bit memory interface or lower, like RayvinAzn stated.. thus making 512MBs of memory on them USELESS.
