I have been dying to play Half Life 2 for the longest time, but I'm not allowed to play M games! I have started to ask my dad telling him "it has no cussing, no sexual content, and the only thing it really has is violence and blood." But when I started to tell him, he wouldn't continue unless I told him what it was rated! So thus I had to say M, and he was all, noooo. But luckily I didn't say the name, which leaves space to try again. How can I convince my dad to let me play it? I have been thinking, maybe I should just download it from Steam, and than say "I don't know what's rated, but take a look and see if it's approprate." Do you guys have any other tips on how I could get this game?

If you're 14, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to play it. I just turned 15 and I have it and from what I've played, there really isn't anything there that you haven't played or seen before. Maybe buy a prepaid Visa with your own money and get the game without your dad knowing? That's what I would do. Anyway, good luck man. It's a good game, hope you get to play that instead of Lego Harry Potter. :D

i wonder the same thing. I get so mad over parents trying to censor stuff, i bet his momma and poppa painted pictures for the queen of england at the bahamas during the holocaust. how old can he be not able to play an M rated game? Why is he even on the site, to review Viva Pinata? Sorry little 9 year old, i think this place is not for you. Alternative is to either get yourself some own money, or kill your parents. Either works just as well. I'd also like to point out that he somehow rated castle wolfenstein...

dude seriously GTFO. you don't know all of his story. for all you know his parents could be strict.

And people wonder why kids are so ****** up this days... I'd NEVER have told my parents to f off... outright rude.

If your parents don't let you play the game, go play it at a friend's house or wait until you are 17 then buy the game.

You should definitely obey your parents brah, there's probably a reason they don't think you're able to handle it, either that or they're abnormally strict. I don't know though but I will tell you that Half Life 2 is probably one of the most mild M-rated games I've played. I mean the worst thing in the game is the Ravenholm level and you see people cut in half or with their chest cavities open but with the dated engine the visuals look very cartoony and most of the game just has a little blood when you shoot people.

Download the demo, show it to your parents, then after you are done, say that it is rated M. Now that they know the content, then they will be like, "This isn't such a bad game after all."

You do realize that his parents are stopping him from playing M rated games because they have his best interests in mind? just because they are a bit ignorant or maybe overzealous doesn't justify being a jerk to them. OP, Half Life 2 is a really good game, maybe you should show your dad articles on the net about how much forward HL 2 takes games as a medium.

Tell him to buy the Orange Box and only show screenshots of Portal to him. lol. It's rated T - M ... so that might work a bit more in your favor if he asks... and you get all HL2 episode, Portal and TF2...

i suppose telling them to f off is a bit extreme for a 14 year old :D but seriously just tell them to sit down with you while you play it for the first 10-20 mins there really isnt anything worse than what a 14 year old would see in fims or on tv

I see so many people these days who can't understand that. Most video games don't have as much violence and sexual content as the majority of movies made these days. So why are "violent" video games such a problem with people?

He also sounds like a dude who doesn't play anything at all... Maybe buy a wii and play your adored Mario? Or maybe your parents are racist and hate italians? Really, i can be how rude i want, i have a beer and a notebook in front of me. To answer your question, you shouldn't buy anything at all. You could also download it if you aren't as ignorant that you think you're going to get CAUGHT doing it. really. Also if you're 14 you must be from russia or germany, those are the only countries i kbnow that censor stuff and the parents there are really really really REALLY strict on such things. Otherwise they are ignorant idiots. Do they forbid you from watching Star Wars as well? It's practically the same thing. The reason why it's M on the orange box is: TF2=Online Online=Chat Chat=Racist bastardskravitzzz

Your comments are seriously hilarious.

I feel sorry for you. The only time my parents were ever strict on rated M games was when I was like 8. Didn't really care though at the time either not till I was about 13 when I played them and my parents didn't care. Pretty much you could try having a friend buy it for you and you pay them back or something and then play it. Otherwise don't see you convincing your dad. God I feel so lucky to never have dumb parents like yours :P.

Never ever tell yor elders to FO or similar.......I`m a gamer dad with 2 sons not yet 10 but getting interested in stuff....

The amount of problems solved on you youngsters does not warrant being told to F anywhere.

Your time willl come... those delinquent types are a morons that suffer from a(UN)? decent upbringing (not necessarily their own fault) , but ......

Do think twice before spitting filth on parents that love you & spent thousands of $ and their own time on you only to get told to go to F*****

Drives me insane!

Earn money, buy a "game" , enjoy. love your family.....

I sound like a vicar :P All the hardcore wannabe men/ boys can F.O & think about this .......

not meaning to sound rude or intrusive, but how did you manage to play Battlefield 2, Batman & Socom? Batman for instance is 16+ under PEGI and MA15+ under the OFLC.

It is usually something that has to do with its 'interactivity' as fictional gamespaces force or provide the option of killing in a direct manner to progress though the medium instead of film directors whom deliver a scene externally. I find it quite silly though, as content that may be harmful to a minor doesn't occur at an interaction level but purely at a mental one, for which good film directors would be able to manipulate; its just that minors want to play something like GTA, yet I have never heard a 13 year old say they want to see Fight Club. ironically in relation to this thread and your avatar I was playing Duke3D at 10-11 years old, "Shake it Baby!" -- I turned out fine, abeit somewhat horny

Lol so many losers in this thread, if your parents wont let you have it, buy it yourself. If you dont think its a big deal that its rated M, they shouldnt notice, if they care then your SoL. There's no changing a parents opinion on video games, your best bet is to go behind there back. Now if you think they will care, then the obvious answer is not to bother, there is a ton of violence in the game, blood and the occasional swear.

Maybe make a deal that you have to play with them supervising you for a little while, and if they think the game is "too violent" you have to turn it off. If it isn't then you can continue playing. HL2 is one of the mildest M rated games ever, the main culprit is probably Ravenholm.

Thing is .... if you need to ask permission then :

A: you need someone to buy it for you.

B: you need someone to hold your hand.

Z: buy game yourself, play. get caught , get a bollocking, & then play...... fking simple as that .

Raise the flame shields! XD

Step 1: Realize the average age of ppl on this site is 10-20 ( mental age 8.5)

Step 2: Realize most people on here dont deserve to have a computer or console, and they flame everyone just about.

Step 3: Show your parents you maturity by doing chores (garbage, dishes) This shows you can take up responsiblitiy. Responsiblity goes hand in hand with maturity.

Step 4: Never ever show your motives to soon. The enemy will see this and surely cound..uh I mean ask until after you earn thier respect.

Step 5: After a timeline of around a week to two or three (depending on how thier days were and how much success has been made earning thier respect) mention Half Life 2. If they still refute mention the responsiblities you have taken up and how you have matured. If they still refute then dire consequences must be met.

Step 6: Write up a comparison to violence and nudity in video games versus the violence in movies. Or just have them watch HL2 gameplay vids on Youtube. Make sure to mention though that HL2 is hugely story based. So much so that the story could fit quite well into a book and that the violence is far from the main motivation to play the game.

Plz reply if this is a success.

I agree. Wait, crap. Im 17. Ahh heck, Ill be 18 soon. Why not just make a test to see if your allowed to have a PC or console. On first boot up just show them a test to see if they are allowed to own and use it. lul, I love that idea.

If you need to ask how to convince your parents to let you play HL2 then you are either to young or immature.

1)Going behind their back will only make things worse.

2)Nagging them about it will just make them annoyed.

3)Telling them to "FO" like some kids here suggest is a great way to make sure that your parents take your computer away.

The overall best way is to be mature about it. And if you dont know what being mature about it is... Well good luck...
