I went into Services (as well as Boot Programs) and disabled all of the Windows Live programs. I don't use it, and I don't have any games that depend on it.

Windows Live just eats up RAM if you aren't using it.:P

BioWare did it right with DA:O - you only need to go online to update your achievements as you wish, or to install a new DLC - you aren't forced to do it.

Because of how bad the reputation GFWL. Hell EVEN if they fix it alot of people wont use it for a few reasons: *They tried to charge money for it (xbox live style) *It did not work correct, it did not add anything as a tool and it just slowed down the computer. *Microsoft said "Well **** you pc gamers* and then came running back with their tail between their legs (pathetic)

If you want customers, then treat them with respect.

You don't even respect your product, you release halo 2 on vista, its not even DX 10 graphics,

you release gears of war on vista, reviews criticize certain bugs, you abandon the pc, with your best exclusives,

flight sim x was dx10, yet when reviews had issues, you moved to fight sim gold,

vista had so much potential, stay with it like you stuck with xp, no you move to win 7,

GFWL is a good concept stay with it, patch it constantly, it can be gold, well its about windows 8, i mean seriously.

I dislike the dl speeds, but i do like the no drm on gfwl, unlike steam. I like not having to login to a service to just play a game.

GFWL is an abomination. It was MS's attempt to consolize the PC market and it thankfully failed hard. They tried to charge you for online play, the entire setup and design of it is flawed and desiged for a controller, it's terribly slow.....lots of issues. In steam I can one click invite/join games in pogress, see my friends and a bunch of other things. GWFL makes you jump through slow hoops to get anywhere.

Though some folks, like myself, have issues with needing to be online on game startup no matter what - otherwise the DLC becomes de-authorized and unusable :/. As to the OP: GFWL adds un-needed overhead to games (and a further requirement for users to deal with for patching). The matchmaking is optimized for consoles, not for PC's and thus it doesn't ever seem to quite work (imo). It probably doesn't help that MS basically treats the GFWL codebase like a red-headed/half-mutant stepchild.

Along with all the truths people just gave, GFWL is a PC dev's enemy. Every single patch needs to go through Window's screening and approval before launch. This means that not only your patches come out much later, but they also are much less frequent because instead of being able to changed 50 lines of code to fix one bug the devs have to compile them all into one patch and or prioritize what bugs they can fix.

Why would you need to approve a patch anyway? It's ridiculous.

Lots of negatives: system resource usage, save registration, need to logon etc, with no benefits.

matchmaking made for consoles not pc? No that makes no sense, but gfwl does suck because it didnt work out like they thought it would. had we paid for gfwl gold things would be different. Now steam has really taken over, making tons of money for valve that microsoft were to stupid to realize was there for the taking.

Then technically steam would have failed aswell. In the beginning it was a terrible mess.

Because its competitor Steam offers more benefits to developers and publishers. The downside is the lack of branding and xbox live achievements but the rest is going to be better on steam. For example publishers must go through a certification process with MS before patches can be released.

Steam had no competition. A product can be a mess and still be successful when nobody else is trying to draw away consumers. Had MS been the first they may have been successful, but probably not.

Charging for online play was beyond stupid. Even moreso when the stereotype for PC gamers is basement dwelling nerds who build computers from scratch for fun. To believe that a group like that would be dumb enough to pay for a service when they're already paying or own the servers in the first place required a complete disconnect from reality. I don't know how they found someone so ignorant of the PC market to have even suggested such a practice, much less found someone dumb enough to put them in charge of anything related to PC gaming. It's a stigma that has pretty much eradicated any chanch GFWL ever has to be successful on PCs.
