Yeah, probably been asked a 1000 times but i guess it wont hurt if i asked one more time. lol. So, just wanted to know how i get the most out of what i have my specs are...

  • ASUS Sabertooth X58 Motherboard
  • Intel Core i7 960 3.20GHz 8M L3 Cache LGA1366 Desktop processor
  • EVGA GeForce GTX580 1536MB GDDR5 Graphics card
  • Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
  • 12GB DDR3 RAM
  • Logitech G9X Gaming Mouse
  • Thermaltake ToughPower 700W & i 1TB HDD + 168 HDD

Would i able to overclock it at 4.0 or higher? here are some pics that may help.

Thanks

Thanks for this magnificent tip but i actually want to talk with people as if they actually own the same specs that i have and what would they do if so because im sure there are some professional people around here who know the ins and outs of PC hardware.

i'm pretty sure the i7 960 clocks close to the same as a 920, 930 and up. Here are a couple places with guides to give you and idea: http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/22106-core-i7-overclocking-guide-beginners.html http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/538439-guide-overclocking-core-i7-920-930-a.html http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2008/11/06/overclocking-intel-core-i7-920/1 http://forums.pureoverclock.com/showthread.php?threadid=5736 As far as getting started, Depending on your cpu/Cooler will judge on how far you can actually push your own overclock, as far as temps/voltages it allows you to utilize. One more thing always do your overclocking via bios ;) GL and HF.

start by increasing the BCLK and playing with the ratio + cpu voltage. ie: for my 4Ghz Im using 191 BCLK, ratio of 21, and 1.33v. You may need to adjust your ram if its set to auto, it may try to over clock it. the UCLK is always 2x what your DRAM Freq is.

one more thing you are going to need prime 95 for a stress test/intelburn/or occt either one s good. Also get cor temp or HW monitor to monitor your temps after a you overclock.

with i7's 70-75 is a good safe zone most are fine with 80-85, imo not going over 80 is fine max temp range if i remember correctly 90 is the max.

max temps for the i7 according to intel is 67C. everyone else uses 100C. but you dont really want to go that high if it can be avoid it. higher the temps the shorter the lifespan. I sit between 73 - 84C under prime95 but its really hot and humid where I am.

How do i know how many volts i could handle on my CPU? mine is set to auto and the QPI/DRAM core voltage is set at 1.40000, in short 1.4v The rest are on auto at the moment.

Im @ 4GHz atm. I havent pushed any higher due to the cheap cooler im using, it works, but theres better ones. I hope to go higher once I get a better cooler. either the NH-D14 or a waterloop, undecided atm.

nh-D14 is great cooler so is the veno X, but if you do go with your own Loop send me a message and i can help you out it's not hard to actually. The only thing is that you need to watch for leaks from time to time but as long as you leak test before actually hooking everything up is a great way to eliminate most leaks head on, i started out with the swiftech ultima 220 kit and now i so far upgraded to a 360 rad and a koolance gpu block :).

Does anyone have an already done setup with the same motherboard? I keep getting with prime95 a fatal error after a minute or to something about rounding 0.5 and that it should or better be lower than 0.4 something like that.

Yeah, because that totally is relevant to the topic at hand. I do vacuum my floor every two days, sorry if some of the cat's hair make you puke but im here to know about OC and not a small part of my room floor. lol

You also just gotta love people judging on pics taken many days ago.

if you can't see the connection between a dirty, dusty floor and increased temps in an overcloking situation then you really need to start doing some more research.

My temps are fine judging by HWmonitor and Core temp. And yes, i do see the connection.. of course i wont overclock the PC without it being super clean inside and outside.

EDIT: However, it isn't relevant to the topic as im simply asking on how to overclock and what would people who own lets say my setup would do. That is all. If i wanted a rate my room thread i would have made one and took new pictures to make you guys happy. lol

sounds like voltages, what do you have them current;y set at?
