Steam automatically updates all games in its catalogue to the latest official version. So just google the latest version of the game in question and in theory steam should have already updated it to that version.

You didnt understand my question. I am asking how do I check it up on steam to be sure all those online facts are true. I am not wanting to search the net for it when I can find it on steam. I have done this before. just cant remember how.

Uhh..I'm not sure it's visible within Steam anywhere other than the game's news page (Right Click game->"View News.") Even then when update notifications are posted, often they do not even list the version number..only the changes that the update made.

Outside of Steam, you can find the game version number in various places..i.e. text files within the game directory, or sometimes in game binary (exe) metadata with Right Click->Properties->Details, like so:

You can also often see the game version number on the start-up screen/main-menu of a game.

As the poster above said, though..it's safe to assume that ALL of your games have the latest patch. Publishers who are selling their games on Steam send patches to Valve as part of their arrangements, I'm sure. Perhaps even in advance.

http://store.steampowered.com/about/

And I quote

"Hunting for patches and downloading from unorganized web sites is so twentieth-century. On Steam, your games stay up-to-date by themselves. No hassles."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_(software)#Client_functionality

And I quote

"Once patchesfor a user's installed software have been uploaded to Steam, they are applied the next time the user logs in or launches a game. Once a patch has been applied, it cannot be removed unless a patch is released which reverses the previous one. Individual games can be set to only update when requested by the user. Steam requires that games be fully patched before they can be played, however."

You can't do anything about it anyway. Retail patches aren't compatible with Steam games.

Yeah I figured this out just beforeVelocitas8made his post. He has it right. Go to the main directory of the game file and right click the .exe file and click properties, there you will find the 'Details' tab.
