My stereo has been whistling for months and I can't figure it out. I tried just using my TV volume but I think the TV's speakers are shot because it sounds like really bad bass. I can't figure it out, nor can I afford to replace either. :(

The whistling drives me crazy and my friends are also complaining.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm sorry, but they're my roommate's. I just use it. I know nothing about it other than how to use it. What am I looking for?

If it has always "whistled" the way they're hooked up now you might have a ground loop and there are isolators that fix it, but it's impossible to say for sure with so little info.

Google ground loop isolator and you'll see examples, but since you haven't even said how the speakers are connected I can't tell what models you should be looking at. And like I said before, it's impossible to really know if that's the problem, was just an idea. I just want to make myself clear so you don't go out buying one in vain, although they aren't expensive :)

Everyone here would love to help, but what you're giving us is basically, "There's something wrong with my car. It makes a weird popping sound." "What kind of car is it?" "I don't know." We can help, but you need to provide more information. Model numbers, what equipment is attached, how everything is wired; without being there we can only go on the information you provide, and right now there isn't much. You might consider taking pictures of the front and rear in as much detail as possible, and linking them here, if you're having difficulty finding the requisite information. Good luck, Boz

Whistling, assuming it's coming from all of the speakers, will not be caused by the speakers themselves, but by the electronics feeding them. Something somewhere is not wired correctly. I'd go right behind the home theater and unplug everything - and I mean everything right to the wall outlets - then quadruple-check to make sure everything is plugged in securely to the proper female jacks.
  • Once everything is unplugged, plug in the two front speakers. Listen to the radio and see if there is any whistling.
  • If whistling is coming from BOTH speakers, there is an issue with your receiver, and it will probably have to be replaced.
  • If there is whistling coming from only one speaker, unplug it and plug the other one into that jack. If it continues to whistle, it's the receiver. If not, it's the speaker.
  • If you did not get any whistling from the receiver, keep plugging things in, checking if there is whistling at any point in the process until you've isolated the issue.
Troubleshooting requires diligence and time. It's not fun, but it will eventually isolate the source of the sound. Good luck, Boz

Actually, I believe it's coming from just ONE speaker. I had turned off the stereo because I had editing to do for my school paper. When I turned it on again, I heard static coming from it even though my TV was off. I went to try to fix it and bumped the speaker by mistake. The static stopped for half a second. I found a good position for it and now there's no static.

Okay, so, uh, it turns out that it's the receiver that's doing it. :( Where can I get a new one for cheap?

That depends on what you define as "cheap." For $319, for example, you can get the Pioneer VSX-1022-K. Or you might go for the Onkyo HT-RC360 at about the same price.

Either will be fine for those speakers you listed. Spend much less than that and you're looking at Craig's List or EBay, in my opinon.

Good luck,

Boz

If those receivers are too expensive I would strongly recommend using Craig's List. You can find some pretty amazing stuff if you know what to look for; you near Milwaukee there, Packers fan? Give the following a look-see, if so: http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=receiver&catAbb=sss&srchType=T&minAsk=&maxAsk=&hasPic=1 Good luck! Boz
