So my brother has the router from which i have pulled a lan cable about 100mtrs. Due to many houses between his and mine I cant use the wifi but I wan't to. So all i have is a lan cable which is connected to my computer. If i buy a router and connect the lan cable in it, will it give out wifi?

Any help is appreciated.

Whoa, hang on a second. You have an ethernet cable connecting your computer to a router two entire yards away??? :o Amazing... Can you not get your own internet plan, or move in with your brother? I guess you could get high gain antennas on both the router and PC, but at that distance, latency would be an issue.

Internet here is quite expensive buddy. There are actually 3 of us sharing the same internet line..... The speeds is 384kbps.

Is there a way i could get wifi. Will plugging the lan cable in a new wireless router give me wifi? I cant move in with him. He is the son of my brothers dad. And both of us live with our parents. Get back to the topic please?

I dont know. I had seen a thing looked exactly like a router and had a place to plug in a lan cable. I dont remember itsname. I thought that was the thing you guys would name. P.S = Me drinking beer, if anyone wanna join I got a lot of extra glasses and beer too.

Yes if you buy a wireless ROUTER you can hook it up to the lan line being run to your house and that will give you WiFi, just make sure you follow the manual for setting up wireless security, wouldn't want the neighbors leaching on your guy's internet.

It had only 1 lan port and 1 power port and nothing else

Those are called wireless access points and do basically the same thing as a wireless router, except they don't allow you to hook up other devices via LAN. They usually aren't worth the cost compared to routers because they aren't much cheaper while offering less functionality.

Yes a wireless router is basically a Wireless Access Point with a Switch built in that will let you attach multiple devices to the LAN if you wanted to.

I'm more concerned about you running and LAN over other people property. Is that legal?

Just buy a wireless router and plug the cable into the WAN port. Set the router up as an access point in the settings.

Its about the same here but that 20 bucks translates to roughly 2grands over here. which is about 1/10th the salary of an average guy.

We have cable poles everywhere so that does not bother people very much.... It will take some time before all cables go underground.. P.s = people here = friendly so no hassle.
