Here are the biggest factors for latency. 1. Distance from you to the server. 2. Internet service provider. 3. Wireless vs Wired 4. Your Routher 5. Your AV/FIrewall.
i was going to make such a thread.i left online gaming along time ago due to my ping.i have dsl 512kb,but my ISP is overloading the lines and its the only one around here.i reinstalled counter strike.im getting 140-250 at best.the only servers i get below 100 is israeli servers which are annoying and full of cheaters.what should i do? i have a USB modem which is really really old.does changing it helps?

Well there isn't much you can do, as most factors for lag are beyond your control. Only options would be to switch providers or upgrade your plan with your current provider to a higher speed. Use a wired connection instead of wireless. And make sure all the correct ports are open on your firewall or router for the games you are playing. Search Google for info on port forwarding for your particular model of router.
I'd make sure you've got nothing eating your bandwidth too. Get yourself a netstat analysis program to see what connections your PC has open when you're trying to play. Kill anything else that might be using the internet. It won't have anything to do with your wireless, even a terrible wireless network connection will give you more LAN throughput than your internet connection is providing.

I used to snipe in TFC with 250 ping. Of course... it was more sniping by instinct than actual aiming
