I just bought Orange Box, brought it hojme and popped in DVD 1.... It installed steam, and launched, trying to download something. I have dial up and it just sits at 0%....

Why does it need to download something, and how the heck do I install the games?

I just paid $50, if you tell me that I Have to download each game on Steam, then they are sending me all the games on disks by overnight shipping.

Steam has to install first, then you have to create an account, then install the games like any other game. I don't know what you did wrong...

Steam has to update. Check your firewall and ports. Also try the official steam forums there should be something there.

Okay, Steam updated, but now it opens a thing with the list of my games (after I entered the CD key) and I click install on Half Life 2 and it says "estimated download time 2 days x hours...." and then says all servers are busy...

How the heck do you install it from the DVD's???? I mean I have two DVD's so what the heck is on them....The only thing I can do is open Steam, and it tries to download the games...

I believe you can disable the updates if you right click and go to properties.... Haven't used steam for awhile, but I'm sure there's a way to disable the updates.

Steam automatically updates any game you have in it. Solution: get high speed internet since most require a hundred megs or more per patch. :D

Alright, so I finally got Portal installed (I think), and it says I have to launch it from my "My Games" list in Steam. Does that mean you have to be connected to the net to play these games? If so, I'm taking this back, because I can't get online every time I want to play these games... I mean that's why I get single player games (also b/c of dial up). Other people need to use the phone and crap...

Anyway, I clicked launch game on Portal and it says launching and nothing happens...I paused the update and still nothing...

This is total BS...

They do not bring broadband toward my house.

It's patching the games that you installed. Unfortunately this is the 21st century and most games have patches that are hundreds of megs in size. With dial up, you are going to be waiting for some time to play those games.

Why do I need a freaking patch to play it offline?

I e-mailed Valve and asked for the patches on CD, or a refund. I'm going to call EBgames tomorrow and see if they will refund it. If not Valve better...

Valve uses steam to manage their games. It automatically updates any games in steam to the latest version if you have it set to do so under the games properties.

Wireless broadband is nice option. I typically get DL speeds of 100-150kb/s on my laptop. It isn't cable but it sure beats dial up.

As I said before (and another has said) there should be an option to disable the updates under the games properties. If not, you're pretty stuck. Have you tried clicking the play offline button? You might just have to suck it up and wait for it to update...... If so, you do *not* have to be online everytime you play the game..... As I mentined there is an offline option. EB and Valve will not refund your money.

heres how you do it the same thing happened to me. uninstall everything the orange box had on it (minus what you may have aready had ie. HL2, HL2 Ep.1) then exit steam and put in the first disc again. this time it should start insalling off the disc and then ask you for the second one and then finish like that. no need to download the whole game. the most u will need to let steam download and install are updates to the games

Hmmm that blows.

Oh I wouldent consider returning it - you cant as its registered to your steam account.

Why dont you take your PC to a mates with boadband or cable and update there.

My mate a few houses down does - updates steam and games at my place, and my neeghibours, as he is bogged down on 56k.

Hey did you use the second disc at all? I had this problem where the game only installed off 1 disc. Now if that has happened to you don't freak out or anything! Its just a weird bug. To fix this:

Delete the folder and remaining content of the games installed for OB. Now reinstall the game as if it was your first time **** - yes, yes, first time, hehe - ho, ho - we all got a laugh from that - quiet please, pretend its tennis) It should as you for the second disc when installing the game. Please write back and let me know if this helps okay?

When you try to install within steam it tries to download from the net and install. Just auto run your cd like you did when you installed steam. This seems to have worked for me.although, it is still taking much longer then i would like. btw dont feel bad it took me 3 hours to figure it out. Fail on the part of valve if you ask me. They should assume their is a disc and have steam check for it. Is this what pc gaming is becoming buggy bloated crash prone security that merely encourages the crackers and pirates. They dont crack to play the game they crack for the challenge of cracking. Dont give me that 21 century bs, of those countries that are online, the us has some of the worst internet connectivity in the world. I have dialup also I think its **** that nearly every game is shipped imcomplete because "its the 21 centruy". **** the deadlines and finish your damn game you will sell many more copies for the little extra work you put in.

Who still uses dial-up? Get with the times. Dial-up is so 1995.

Surely there must be some kind of broadband in your area, if not DSL or Cable, then at least cellular broadband.

Find someone who has updated version of The Orange Box then ask him to make backup discs for you. Then use those discs to install the games.

Not every PC gamer goes online much. Some people just want to play single player games. Dialup makes sense for such people because it's cheaper.

People these days...

Just do it manually. Go to My Computer -> right click on the DVD -> click explore -> click setup.exe.

Is it really that hard?

Since the only setup.exe just installs Steam and doesn't give me the option to install the games. Yes, it's quite difficult to do just that.

I doubt you bothered much with it >_>

Notice how there are two setup files? one that is for Steam and you don't have anything to do with it if you have Steam and one that is the OB's setup? no not Steam, even if it has the icon and IF you dare to press it an autorun will start and you'll be able to install the games from the disk.

OP:

I had the same problem, my game (E:TW) wouldn't work even after I had installed it off Steam. I didn't bother to let it update because my internet was being slow. You need to let the update finish, for as long as that takes, then the problem should be fixed. If your worried about using up the phone line, start the update every night (i.e 10:00) and leave it till morning. Pause update, then do same thing the next night. Repeat.

You can turn auto updates off if you want (although i would advice against it).

You can also TURN YOUR STEAM TO OFFLINE mode, and it wont download any upcoming updates (although once again its good to get updates though).

And dialup modem bud? As others have said, look into getting wireless broadband?

About Steam, yes it's BS!

I just reinstalled Windows and I need to download back all of the games at 0.1Mb/s. It's SO long. And I can't even install all of the games because I have an internet limit of 25gb. I already used some of it and i'll need to wait until next month in order to download the other games. Seriously, what comes on the DVDs? Why is there two if it's not even used?

If you have the retail CD-rom/DVD's, then cancel the download.... and install from your Disks. I have HL2 on disk, and that's how I shave off hours from installing it.... Then, I let steam update it.... which takes awhile, but at least it's shorter than DL'ing everything. Although... I can't really say if your disks are set up like that or not... I only have the orginal HL2 on disks (5 cdroms, to be exact....) Have no idea if Orange Box, or whatever else is like that.

Valve games don't install, they download, so you basically got jipped just like the rest of us(and the game was a disappointment as well, except portal). It autoupdates the game as well.

You can play offline though. Once steam in installed and you downloaded your games after a few weeks, you can open steam, on the top left select 'file' then 'go offline'. Doing that it wont check for updates or require the internet to play, and shouldn't interfere with your internet connection either. Although, maybe it still uses up the internet; you just don't know with valve.
