i know ps3, xbox 360, and steam automatically update your games (if connected to the interent). however, if you buy a PC game in the store (a hard copy) how do you know if or when the game needs an update? i know you can go to the games website and download updates and patches, is that the only way? or can pc games automatically download updates or does it depend on the game.

Personally all of my games have updated themselves. Most recently Bad Company 2, I do not have the Steam version and it informs me when an update is required and installs it before letting me play just like ps3 and Xbox.

It depends entirely on the game, though most games have some sort of method of recognizing when a patch comes out and making that fact aware to the player.

davidkamayor

obviously you are wrong i have played many pc games mostly through steam

i do not like multiplayer and hardly ever play the multiplyer portion of a game (except for borderlands)

btw the first thing i said is that i know steam games autoupdate, the only reason i want to buy actual hard copies of games is that it gives you the choice to resell them later on, in steam you can not sell your game used.

thank you for not answering anything.

It depends on the game, If the game is on GFWL (Games for Windows Live) or Steam then it should auto update, otherwise the only way to tell if an update is available is by google or trying to join an internet game and and getting told you have an incorrect client version. I heard XFIRE auto updates your games and you can use any game on it. Iv never really bothered with XFire though.

I think it depends if the game has an online portion or not. I know for example Mass Effect didn't require me to update, but I read online it fixed some bugs. Where as an online game it's usually required to get into servers and what not. If you're into reselling PC games, make sure the game doesn't require a log-in and such. For example Guild Wars: you get one account creation per cd key. I think Dragon Age is similar to this.

Honestly, this thread is quite a laugh for someone who can remember using a 56K modem. Go to google, type in the name of the game and put 'patch' after it.

Many pc games have "launchers" .. A little welcome screen where you can click to play the game, click to change options and click to check for updates (some check automatically and some check in-game). Others don't however, those you'll have to hunt down yourself =)
