CPU overclocking is done in the BIOS (for best results)

and video card overclocking is done with applications like MSI Afterburner.

Well i clocked it to 3.5ghz i think. I have a custom heatsink on it so im just gonna check temps now. My Mobo is actually pretty overclocking friendly. Gonna stress test it and see how it performes

Update: Okay on Idle (a.k.a Desktop) it's 49c-50c Is that too hot?

When OCing you just have to find that magic number for best performance boost and stability.

Yeah but my cpu is on 50c on idle is that too hot or alright? my room is normal room temp, maby slightly warmer than normal actually. When i stress test it what would be a good point to say ive OCed it too much and the temp is too high?

Update:went to 87c highest then PC shut it self down. Gonna tone the overclocking down in Bios

Update 2: Okay redid the Value: CPU Clock3192.71 MHz (original: 2833 MHz, overclock: 13%) So i've reached 3.2ghz pretty much. Gonna test it again.

Be glad motherboards have that failsafe otherwise you might've fried it. 87C is definitely too hot for a cpu.

Be sure to unlink your RAM and CPU speeds if you already haven't...

Well i've redid the settings again. So a smaller overlock this time around and Played Bad Company 2. I noticed a gain in performance andthePC didnt shutdown this time. Do you think i should keep it at this?

What CPU do you even have?

BC2 isn't a benchmark, try IntelBurnTest.

No. Because it made the computer shutdown when i had it like that. I've Currently got the CPU set at 2993.03 MHz. If i set it any higher the CPU overheats.

Did you unlink your RAM and CPU speeds? Did you increase the CPU & NB voltage? What kind of cooler do you have? What is your max CPU temp at 3GHz using the burnin test? You should be able to get more than 3GHz out of that chip...

No i didnt unlink because no one said anything about that untill now. People always say "Ohh you have to overclock or else its a waste of money" and so i did. This is basicly why i dont overlock anything. I keep everything at factory default.

how about actually trying to do your research before attempting to "overclock" and jumping in needlessly and fying something, do not blame others for your errors. If someone told you to overlock then you should of done the corrct type of research.

You must've missed it. I told you to unlink the speeds on the first page so you wouldn't fry your RAM...

87 degrees? And this is why you do research before overclocking. That is dangerously hot. Looks like you need a better cooler, or you're using way too much voltage.

Q9550's are still pretty nice CPUs. You should def. be able to get some more from her though.

Q9550=PII 965=Corei5 760

Edit: When doing overclocking, it's a lengthy process if you want the most speed while keeping a certain stability. Do it in incremants, 50-100mhz a try, check your numbers after each one(Voltage too!) and test it (intelburntest) for a few mins. Ok, do it again. Your PC will thank you in the long run.
