Does the RE4 Graphics mods still win out compared to the new xbl and psn versions?

I don't think they did anything to the HD version except up the resolution, so I doubt it looks better on the 360/PS3.

This. RE4 Vanilla looks better than its console counterpart. With mods (including hi-res cutscene mod), it absolutely crushes any console version to date. You can play the PC version with a controller as well with the x-pad mapping. PC is the best version. I recommend Texture 2.0.

You can add mods to RE4 PC all you want, but I don't think you can replace the dynamic lighting, extra polygons, water effects, extra geometry, toned down particle effects, and real time cut scenes with mods.

I actually think you're required to play with a controller on the PC.

I'm pretty sure they patched in the extra visuals, at least the lighting.

The only thing missing are the real-time cutscenes. You can find a mod for just about everything else.

There's a small mod that enables mouse support, but I prefer to use a controller. There's a mod that gives button layouts and pictures of the 360 and PS3 controller :D

The PC version is a direct port of the PS2 version. The PC version does not have any of the special visuals that were present in the Gamecube and Wii versions. The ps2 version is worse in everything in terms of a audio and visuals.

Sure, you can mod the game to get higher res textures, but everything else will mostly be the same.

I know what it was a port of, but you're acting like it's impossible to patch in the extra graphical features the Gamecube had, which they did. The patch brought GC textures, a lighting engine which they ignored completely, fog, and everything else that was missing from the PS2 version.

And you must not know about the mods. You can replace damn near everything in this game.

Someone here on Gamespot got a hi-res cutscene pack working.. he gave me the links and I swapped the video files but I'm still getting low-res scenes. I read that you have to download a special video codec or something and have that enabled while you're playing RE4. It's the only frustrating bit that I can't seem to get working. If you could shed some light on this, I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm not sure. I have what I think resampled/upscaled videos. I don't remember using any codec just for this, however you should have something like K-Lite installed anyway. All I did was put them where the other movies are, in the Movies folder thats in the main RE4 directory.

Also I was looking through the Movies folder, and not all of them are the resampled/HD cutscenes. Some are still the low-res PoS that came with the game.

these new "remakes" arent even remakes at all. they are ports with higher render res. I think the only exception so far is halo.

Let's clear things up:

The GameCube and Wii versions of Resident Evil 4, as Jango already mentioned, use quite a few different assets not present in the PC and Playstation 2 iterations. Yes, the PC version was patched, but only to bring it up to be graphically on par the Playstation 2 port.

For example, the geometry in the GameCube/Wii version is more complex and it sports different shaders and a lighting system that went missing in the PC/PS2 porting process. They look flat and dull in comparison.

Textures are also slightly sharper on GC/Wii editions, but that can obviously be remedied on the PC, adding even higher res textures in the form of mods.

The new editions lack anti-aliasing though. It's not that bad, but the higer display resolutions of the PC version help make them less noticeable on that system.

The audio is reportedly muffled/compressed in the remasters, at least on the PS3. Might not necessarily be better on the PC by default, but at least you can modify weapon sounds and whatnot.

In short: the PC version lacks quite a few bells and whistles of the remasters that simply can't be modded in. Be prepared to put some time into modding what is actually moddable to at least get it to look somewhat decent on your PC.

I read further upon it, and the only thing missing now are real-time cutscenes and higher quality models from what I understand. Apparently the GC version uses slightly more polygons in their models. Honestly, I really can't tell the difference because I can't compare them side by side in HD.

The entire lighting engine was scrapped for the PS2 to get it to run, but was patched back in for the PC. You also have HDR and Bloom present because of mods. Due to te nature of injecting or manually forcing such techniques into a game, you can't manually edit what it affects so everything is affected.

Textures are higher res in the GC/Wii, but as you said mods range from high-res upscaled textures to completely different textures. I don't think there's a complete retexture done yet though. Just played a bit and a lot of them are still the same, ugly low res mess they were years ago. I think there's a size limitation with the resolution of the textures though, or some of them are just really that bad.

You can force AA through your video card's control panel. I use FXAA Injection for it and it's really nice. Works surprisingly well in RE4.

The audio was a bit muffled, but honestly a lot of the default sounds lacked punch or depth. I'm not sure what the GC/Wii sound like in comparison. My biggest problem with the audio were the handguns. They sound like popguns ffs. Already a ton of weapon mods and weapon sound mods, as well as overhaul or redone sounds. Someone even made their own music for it (I'm pretty sure it's their own,) and I love the way it makes it sound more like classic RE.

Modding it takes no time at all really. The biggest PITA is that there is no central hosting server for all the mods (but there is a forum for it,) so it's really hard or impossible to find some unless someone reuploads it.

By default/vanilla, yeah the PC version blows big time. Modded? Easily the best version around. Also Elann, you're right. There has to be something like an extra codec to install. None of the cutscenes are working now, but they worked before I reinstalled Windows. I'll do some research and report back to you.

If you don't use TexMod, what mod did you use for new textures? I've never had a problem or glitch with TexMod so I never bothered looking for others. Your environment textures for outside look a hell of a lot better than mine (I think.) What mod pack are you using btw?

Also are you using the HD cutscene pack?

Yeah, I really want to know which HD cutscene pack you're using? The very first cutscene in your video is much higher-res than the original video. I could never get it to work and gave up on it. Do you just swap out the video files? Because that isn't working for me.

I used a mod pack which had everything together. Only place I found the pack was on a torrent website and even though it does not include the game I don't think I can link it here. The HD cut scenes are from MatrixCN They were also some enhanced cut scenes from Sp00kyFox . The textures are just put into a specific folder and they load with the game.Texmod is not needed. I am also using a customized ENB series mod.

Never mind. I got it working. Make sure you have FFDSHOW application, right click on the line where it says "XVID" and select "set supported files to xvid." The cutscenes look much, much better now and are watchable. That was so simple and I was over-thinking it. Btw, I'm using Spookyfox's Hi-res HD cutscenes.

There wasn't even a lighting engine on the PS2 version. It was patched in with 1.10. There was also a Bloom and I believe an HDR injection mod. There was no fog, also patched in. I think the only thing missing are the higher quality models, but honestly I can't tell the difference between the Wii and PC model.

I haven't gotten that far yet in the PC version. I'm having an error with HD cutscenes I found and I can't progress past them. If I had direct Gamecube footage, and damn good quality too because I can only find **** quality on YouTube, then I would definitely make a comparison comp.

For now you can look at my screenshots I took myself here (they're near the bottom of the page.)

EDIT: Wow, just found some good quality HD footage from the PS3. Some of these textures really do throw off the original look. Some are far too bright and sharp, or just don't fit in at all. Also I think one of my mods is conflicting with the lighting, as some shadows aren't displaying right. Might be the FXAA injection doing that.

The only thing the PC version is lacking is good water effects. The gamecube has better water effects but it only shows in a few areas like the lake boss scene. Everything else the PC has and better. I think the video of mine that I linked on the last page is one of the best examples of how RE 4 will look on PC. Although there are finer texture details left out in the video because it can't pick out such tiny things as the threading on Ashley's clothing. But you can easily see it when playing the game.

I forgot to turn on ENB with my screens. Forgot I even had it. That's why it feels so off, plus some of the textures don't really fit.

It does feel off. I wouldn't say it's better, because some people prefer the old stuff, but it definitely looks a hell of a lot more modern. The water does suck, but thankfully we're not around it that often. The game needs a true remake, but I doubt that'd happen even though Capcom has the resources for it (and I'd buy it an instant.)

you are still missing alot of mods

your cutscene mod seems low res, there is a new 3gb one, looks really good

sound mods, gun's sound like toys in the original, find the weapon sound pack

weapon skins, weapons look like plastic, mod them all

villagers and boss mod, makes them all higher res

text mod, makes the text much sharper

higher resolution ashley (hope you got that)

there is a few others, like a silent hill music pack, so much better imo

edit: oh your ENB is too brown and bloom, imo, its best to take it away and get Bloom 2.2 (which fakes HDR)

But you can easily see it when playing the game.RyviusARC

yeah, the water is actually the only thing that looks worse

i wonder why it hasnt been modded, i guess it cant
