How does SLI work?

Do they both have to be the same card for SLI or can it be say an 8800 gs and a 8600 gt?

I'm pretty sure they have to be the exact same card for it to work, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Yes the same card 8800GT & a 8800GT nothign else the card must be the same tough if one is overclocked the overclocked card will turn to the original one that isn' overclocked in order to scyncronize

However, I just read that, if you have two of the same card, but are of different BRAND (such as Asus, HIS, XFX etc) they can still collaborate together. So it must be the same card architecture and core, but the Brands can change, as the card itself still uses the same wiring.

Well, you're not going to find an HIS Nvidia card as they're an ATI-only board partner, but you're correct that it doesn't matter what brand of card you use. It has to be the same model card, but it can be from a different board partner and it can even be overclocked, although both cards will default to the lowest speed.

You need a Nvidia motherboard with a Nvidia chipset with at leas 2 PCI-e slots wich are recomended to be at x16 x16

Not exactly true. 680i offers full PCI-e 1.1 bandwidth, and X58 offer full PCI-e 2.0 bandwidth with the NF200 chip.

Yeah the X58 but iv mean in performances for overclocking & gaming. 780i / 790i > 680i while 750FTW Is equal to 680i to better in some benchy but 750ftw is pretty lame for sli motherboard

to run your graphic card in SLI mode, you must have 2 identical graphic card..
