How dose windows 7 install so quick?

my friend got windows 7 64 bit. poped in the disk. and 10 minnits later (probbly less) we were on the desktop for windows 7. How the heck did they perfect it to install so quick? When we went to install windows XP and vista they took over half an hour each!

The initial install has NONE of those crap programs. Absolutely none.

XP does a full format, and the install difference between Vista and 7 was pretty negligible to me.

I doubt that has anything to do with it. XP is smaller than Windows 7 (i believe), yet it installs faster. My guess would be less compression. They are using a DVD, rather than a CD. (DVD is also faster I believe)

If that was directed towards me, Full formatting a hd takes hours (on large volumes)

I've just installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a brand new harddrive and was amazed how quickly it installed everything and was up an running - a very smooth and painless install, and because of advances in the drivers natively recognised by Win 7, I had very little hunting for drivers or needing to setup things like my network connections. So much of it was detected automatically. A similar install of XP or Vista would easily have taken 45-60mins

If that was directed towards me, Full formatting a hd takes hours (on large volumes)

XP takes forever even without a format at all. As I said before, either compression, or whatever horrible install method MS used for XP is no longer the case. No way should XP take as long as it does to install.

XP did an install much like installing any other program. Vista and Win7 have an ISO of the OS and simply copy/paste (its a little more complex than that, but thats the general idea) the OS onto your hard drive. It's speed is limited more by the speed of your CD drive than anything else. Doing the little hack to get an installation working off a USb drive can sometimes cut the installation time in half with a fast USB stick.

try installing server 2003, it takes forever. But yeah I noticed Windows 7 installed pretty quick as well

They must have optimize the installation, cause xp took me in the past 1 hour from a full format. Vista 35-40 minutes and 7 64 bits 20-25minutes.

Put the install on, go away for 30 minutes(make some nice chocolate milk :) ) then come back.

Good question. I like the ease of Windows 7's install as well..it litterally takes a few clicks and it installs and finishes within minutes on its own. They really did make this one more simpliar.

You can sort of do the same thing with XP depending on what slipstreaming tools you use. Some of them will let you choose how to compress things like the Driver.cab file so that they can install faster, at the cost of less compression, which means more space required on the disc. The stronger the compression, the longer it would take to extract for use in the setup/install process. My guess is then, that they (Microsoft) basically played around with the levels of compression that would be needed for certain things to try to find that happy medium of speed and file size.

So Windows 7 doesn't give you the "go make chocolate milk while you wait" option? Then Windows 7 sucks!

windows 7 professional 64 bit installed very quickly on my laptop, i was upgrading from vista. probably took 15 minutes or less i would guesstimate.
