My brother in law likes playing games but he is on a 100-150 dollar budget and wants a graphics card that doesnt require a aftermarket PSU, he mainly playes Counter Strike, and I see there are 8600GT's on newegg for about 110 I think its a good deal, but I am not sure how good the 8600 GT is?

Pre-built PC with a 300W power supply? The 8600GT is definitely your best bet without replacing the power supply.

It'll easily max Counter-Strike 1.6, CZ or Source. :)

Be sure to get an 8600GT with GDDR3 memory, as the GDDR2 version is significantly weaker.

The 8600GT is a pretty good card for today's games, but future games may be a bit too much.. so he should expect mediumish settings in the future.

Well its not for me, plus ATI Radeon is around 170-180$ plus he would need a new PSU.

Well I will recommend it to him since he likes buying stuff online anyways, I will tell him to get the EVGA series because of the step up program if he has more money he can always step up and its a quality brand.

The 8600GT is not THAT bad... I had one and my friend has one just expect to max everything from 2006 and lower at 1024x768 XD prolly not the newer games but if you have prebuilt psu its simply the best your gonna get. What res does he play at? I dont reccomend gaming with it past 1000x1200 res's.

8600GT and X1950pro are 8/10. For 110$, it's worth it. Don't be stupid to get it plays DX10.

Would the 8600GT and/or the X1950XT work with a 300W PSU?

Ok. Are there any other DX9 alternatives that would be more powerful? 7900GS, perhaps?

Again the 7900GS needs more power PLUS the 8600GT is pretty much a 7900GS with DX10 they perform very alike. The 8600GT is a GREAT video card people just dont like it cause its not no where near as good as a 8800 and doesnt do good in resolutions past 1440x900.

Not exactly like a 7900GS,but it's can get high settings in almost any game out @ 1280x1024/1440x900 or lower.

Yup I know this from personal experiance. Dont expect maxxing DX10 games tho... I lose ALOT of frames from DX9 - 10 on Call of Juarez but im guessing crysis will be better optimized.

Call of Juarex isn't a true Dx 10 game, and yes crysis is supposed to be much better optimized.

If your Crossfired HD 2900XT's don't run Crysis or Hellgate maxed out, then it'll be the Geforce FX days all over again...

Don't forget WiC,Bioshock,etc :P

But CoJ,LP and CoH Dx 10 are just poorly optimized and they show little graphical improvments over their Dx 9 versionsat the same time, and i also have a feeling that the HD 2600XT will rape the 8600's in Dx 10...

JUST A DAY after we uncovered the existence of Nvidia's Geforce 8950 GTX and Geforce 8900 GTX, our friends in Taiwan confirmed the news. You can read our original stories here and here.

The Geforce 8950 GX2 is a dual-chip card based on a new 80 nanometre G80 chip, probably codenamed something else. Both GX2 GPUs are clocked at 550MHz and the difference is GDDR4. The card comes with 2x512MB of 256-bit GDDR4 memory clocked at 2000MHz. The card has 96 Shaders, per chip. It will be priced at $600.

The second in Nvidia's spring line-up is the Geforce 8900 GTX clocked at 700MHz GPU and 2200MHz memory. The chip still has a 384-bit memory interface and comes with 768MB of memory. The card uses a new 80 nanometre chip and has 128 Shaders. Compared to the Radeon X2800XTX it will end up shorter on clock and memory interface. You can compare them here.

The Geforce 8900 GTX is priced at $550.

Meanwhile, the Geforce 8900 GTS is a new card clocked at 600MHz GPU with 2000MHz GDDR4 memory. It supports the 320-bit memory controller and comes with 640Mb of memory. This card should cost $500 and it is using the 80 nanometre chip. This card will still have 128 Shader units.

The current king of the crop, the 8800 GTX will drop in price to $450, while the Geforce 8800 GTS loaded with 640MB of memory stays up in the $400 price range.

Nvidia has two more 80 nanometre cards. The Geforce 8900GT with 600MHz core and with a 256-bit memory interface comes with 512MB of 1800MHz GDDR3 memory. It has 96 Shaders and is built on a 80 nanometre process and will cost $400.

The 8900 GS will be the cheapest G80-based card. The 80 nanometre based beast is clocked at 550MHz core and 1600MHZ memory. The card has the 256-bit memory controller and comes with 256 or 512MB of GDDR3 memory. It also has 96 Shaders. The 256MB version will cost $200 while 512MB incarnation will end up at around the $250 price mark

Q4 2007 = 9 series :) (they can be delayed, who knows)

The 8900 series have less than 3 months to appear.
