From reading pc gamer mag it looks very very very solid, and considering its from bioware, it has a slightly larger chance then most other clones. I have two predictions- 1. Its going to do a ut3 or age of conan or 2. It will remain having a solid player base (not quite as much as wow) maybe like 1-2mill players.

The way I see it, it can go either way. Gameplay mechanic wise I am not sure I know enough to judge.

From what we have heard, it might be the first real rival to WoW, my fear is that they stick too close to the WoW formula, Despite thier story driven attempt.

I doubt it will be a hard failure if it goes thew wrong way, Biowareis a competent beast, and the SW licence will have many a geek seek into there ;)

So: Either a fan sucess, but not a market sucess (about 5 mill users),or it will blow just about any mmo out of the water.

Personally I doubt Id be able to judge on the game fairly when its out, I loathe star wars ;) I do think alot of people will love it ^^ (or I hope they will)

The Star Wars brand didnt save the previous MMO. It has no REAL strenght in the MMO market over any other popular license.

It is the very first MMO from BioWare, but considering how great games they've made in the last decade, I think it will be a success. Maybe not 11 million players, but definitely more than 2 millions and it will stay solid as rock.

This is my fear too. It doesn't seem like they are doing a whole that is original here... just kind of adding a Star Wars paint job to WoW and toss in some story driven elements. Despite that, I have a feeling it will be a good game unless Bioware completely messes up.

Hmm, it could go either way. Bioware is a great company for sure, but they have made their name in fairly linear single player games. Just because they made some great single player RPGs, it seems to be a big jump to make a big MMO WoW-killer. And with that said, how many times have we heard games come out in the past 3-4 years that were going to be WoW-killers?

Dont get me wrong, i hope its amazing. I cancelled my WoW about 6 months ago but played for over 4 years before that and would love for an awesome new MMO that is worth my time.

first of all, I sincerely hope Bioware and EA do not expect TOR to be a WoW-killer...many titles have tried this, and failed.

With that said, I believe TOR will be extremely successful. Right off the bat they have two things going for them: first, its made by Bioware, which has a fanbase numbering in the millions; second, its a Star Wars title which instantly guarantees the game some sort of instant popularity.

To make it truly successful, however, the game must have a good community, a smooth launch, and most of all it must be accessible. MMOs are an expanding genre, yet unperfected, so they need to be easy enough to not alienate the casual player, yet deep enough to hook the more hardcore folks

Thats just my two cents. I think Bioware can pull it off.

If the combat is the same old group mechanics that WOW had years to perfect then Bioware's chance of being sucessful is 0%.

If they come up with something new or change it up enough so it at least doesn't feel like WOW then I'll give it a 5-10% chance.

And thats the Problem, most WoW players dont play because of the Dialogue. Thats why I don't think ToR will be able to get a huge Community 1-2million max.

People saying that copying WoW is a bad thing for a new MMO are either stupid or clueless, because that's exactly what Blizz did with WoW.

They copied the **** out of existing MMOs and applied their smart ass game designers to weed out bad stuff and tune a bit here and there and voila...

Yeah it'll be Bioware's 1st MMO! so was WoW for Blizz (zomg!!!!)

It's quite on the contrary then: by copying WoW's format (but not the content obviously) the game would be on a merry way to success.

Bombarding with dialogue is ok as long as there is tons of other content besides that. Voiceovers are fine as long as you have a constant craving for new loot and exploration.

I don't think I'll ever buy or try to get into an MMO ever again, no matter how appealing. It'll be interesting though, to see how Bioware handles combat in an MMO - could be a disaster or something great. I can only play a game for a couple of hours at a time, some times not even that (except for Sundays). In an MMO, that's enough to maybe gain a level early on. MMO's have and continue to be the death knell for compelling PC video games.

No MMO before that had over 10 million people. They have already spent millions upon millions to perfect that play style for the last 5 years. Not saying someone can't do it better. I just don't believe someone can come in and do it a lot better on day one. Also, most of the people that quit WOW quit it because they are tired of that type of game play. WOW came in the market at the right time and really fine tuned WOW for the last 5 years now. No way Bioware can just come into the market and beat them at their own game. Bioware has to come up with some thing new or at least change it up enough to feel different.

The problem with your argument is that when WoW was created, MMO's like EQ were very cumbersome, extremely difficult, and time consuming. WoW took that formula, streamlined it, made it more accessible, removed a lot of the time sinks and monotony. Now that Blizzard has already done that, what more can you do with that WoW / EQ formula? And there's been tons of WoW / EQ clones since WoW launched. What Blizzard accomplished with the launch of WoW can never be duplicated again using that formula because they just happened to be the first to make the EQ model accessible and casual. The only way someone can blaze a new trail now is to do something entirely different. There's nothing left to do with the typical WoW formula. The numerous WoW clone failures seem to prove this point.

Yea... most people look at an mmo for gameplay/competitiveness... not conversation gimmicks. I still dont see whats so great about ToR... please enlighten me =/ because im not feeling it at all..

My predictions?

- Mass influx of about 3 million players by the 60 day mark.( not unlike every other MMO since wow )

- Pulls steady at 2 million by the 6 month mark.

- Drops to 500k by 9 months when people complete everything there is to do

- Drops to 250k and stays there until a major content upgrade.

- Jumps to 500k for a month due to said content upgrade.

- Falls back to 250k a month later and...

- Slides down to about a static 100k for the remainder of its life cycle until the plug gets pulled around 24 months after release.
