How is a GTX 460 SE?

I have a friend going to the USA in a few months and he told me that he could buy stuff for me if i wanted to (anything in the USA is so much cheaper than anything here). I'm thinking about buying a GPU. And i looked at some prices and places and i'm looking at a GTX 460. How is the card? Max settings on modern games? Will still be able to keep up with future releases? And how big would be the improvement coming from a 9800 GT?

If you have the founds and will to spend a little more the gtx560 ti/HD6950 is a good buy that will live longer and fita bit better to the "keep up with future releases" question.

The gtx460 is a much better card than the 88/98gt wouldn't surprice me if it beat out two of those SLI'ed in just about anything.

But i would like to know a little more: How much bigger is a GTX 460 compared to my 9800 GT? (Trying to see if it would fit...). Is it hotter than the 9800? In your opinion, do you think it's worth it? (i chose this card because i'm trying to spend as little as possible while having a good improvement that will be noticeable)

It should be a decent upgrade. Note that there are three different official versions of the GTX 460, a 1 GB, a 768 MB and a 1 GB SE. The 768 GB and SE versions offer somewhat lower performance than the 1 GB non-SE.

I don't think I'd bother importing electronics like that, unless your current habitat is in the digital dark age you could probably find your wares as cheap in a local internet store as in an American retail.

Edit: My friend found the SE version $35 cheaper than the standard 1 GB version (he didn't have time to do much searching though)

SE is definitely the weakest of the bunch. You can heavily Oc it match a regular 768Mb 460, but its not worth it. Evga has the 768MB GTX 460 on their online store for 90 bucks right now. Its B-Stock, so its open-box/refurbed with the standard 90-day warrenty.

The GTX460 is great. I got mine just after the price drop on them, and I run most new games in 1920x1080 and max settings, and I get an average of about 30 to 40 (about 1 year old games get around 60) fps. So I would say that I am very happy with this card.

for the orice of a 460 SE you can get the better 6790 or the 5830 EE from sapphire.

My GTX 460 manages 1080p beautifully. I recommend it.
