This really belongs in the hardware forum. Anyways your question is extremely vague, along with the specs you posted. What kind of GPU do you currently have (512MB ATI doesn't tell us anything). What kind of NVidia GPU were you looking at?

Ok... is it a dual core cpu at 3ghz or do you have a triple core cpu?

2gb of is plenty Xp wont read all the extra memory that you want to add.

Ok go here and select a game http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest and copy the results of your pc specs you see or post a screenshot of it.

The 8600 gts is alright i can max out most games although your proc is better, and your mobo is probably better too. I can play crysis on med. settings with over 35+ frames at 1024x768. You might want to go with an 8800 though or equivalent ati gpu, 512 mb rec. though.

For $200 you can do so much better than the 8600. It is no better than decent DX9 cards. At your price range the ATI 4850 is the best by a long, long way. It even beats the 8800GT, which was king for a while. There really is no other choice.

Fair enough, if you are looking cheaper go with a 3850 or 3870. Both offer far better performance than an 8600, and are cheaper than the 8800 range without losing out too much on performance. If you want cheaper still, I would recommend a DX9 card such as an Nvidia 7900 or ATI 1950. You can pick them up really cheaply and they will dominate the 8600 in terms of DX9 performance. The 8600 is not a fast enough card to get playable FPS on DX10, so the fact that the older cards do not have DX10 support is irrelevant.

I doubt he has a dual socket server motherboard.

It's highly likely he has a dual core processor.

OK this is terrible details. Basically first describe what games youll be playing how long you want it to last how quickly you'll be upgrading it and are you watching dvds or doing other stuff?

Also give us your screen as that has alot to do with your GFX card.

And for referance i have a ASUS EN8600GT it has a high performance stock cooler (14 degrees colder) and i can OC it to GPU700/MEM900 comfortably with the stock cooler and my desk fan on hot days.

But in terms of tehnology that is required in todays games a 8600GT is becoming out dated and the entire 7xxx range is long gone in aspect of renderers and shaders.

I am a computer consultant. So if you tell me what you'll be doing with it what your budget is and how fast you'll be upgrading it then i can give you a system to buy. But until i know more about your computer nobody should really be speculating . He may have a ATi HF 3870 512Mb for all we know and a Corsair TwinX 2gb 800Mhz pack. and here we are suggesting x1950's lol.

Anyway we can help you alot more if you just pull the side off your comp and read the model numbers out or by clicking start>run>type directx>click OK>Save and upload it somewhere.

Talk soon.
